About this project

THE PLOT:

A sunny day out in suburban England doesn’t go as planned for bachelor Niall when his efforts to bond with his new girlfriend’s son James go badly wrong. On a trip out of town, he introduces teenager James to his favorite hobby - archery, but the adventure is quickly ruined as their differences become apparent. Into their misspent afternoon enters Jess, a teenage girl who causes the tension to rise as the two lads fight for her attention. She plays on it, and when she decides to pair off with Niall, James’ frustration boils over and he has to fight the urge to shoot at Niall with his bow and arrow.

ABOUT THE FILM:

Bow & Arrow evokes the hazards of single life, and how men can easily become boys and vice versa. It highlights how differences in personalities get magnified in new, strange contexts and how quickly things can become unstuck. Emotions and feelings run high, and when intensified by puberty, alienation and masculinity, things can easily boil over. The film explores those tensions in a subtle and visual way

The short also relates to some material I am developing for a feature film, which I will be working on after this project.

SOME FILM REFERENCES:

For its poetic atmosphere, tainted with darkness and its children who operate on an adult level: David Gordon Green’s "George Washington"

Jane Campion’s short; “Peel: an exercise in discipline” is visually compelling, where the style acts as a counterpoint for the film’s drama, allowing for other interpretations.

Andrei Zvyagintsev’s “The Return” is a poignantly observed look at patriarchal tensions and estrangement.

Andrzej Jakimowski’s “Tricks”, highlights the absurdity and comedy of a child’s viewpoint of his errant father.

For British countryside adventures that can go wrong, there is none better than Mike Leigh’s classic “Nuts in May

IN-KIND SUPPORT:

So far I have some pledges of in-kind support from some generous and talented individuals and organizations, which will help greatly in the making of this film. The producer Jonathan Rae of the production “Day of the Flowers” is providing 35mm Film Stock and helping as Executive Producer, Prime Focus London (grading, post production), Steve Annis (Great DOP and long time-collaborator), Andy Brierley (Casting director) Mike Lindsay of the band Tunng will be providing some original music for the production, Kate Glover (Red Sparrow/Future Shorts producer), Julian Eguiguren (Ace editor and another long time collaborator) Saffron Hunt (styling/costume) Andy Paddon, (sound recordist), Reactor15 are providing website support, RAAK are a digital agency and are offering consultation on the project,

Hopefully as the production rolls on, we will accumulate more support and help from other people and companies that will help realise the film.

WHERE YOUR MONEY WILL GO:

Your $8,000 will aid us in the production, equipment, crewing and insurance of the filmmaking process, and then contribute towards post production editing, colouring, sound mixing and completing the film, plus (if there’s any left in the pot), pr and promotion of the finished film. Between your contributions and the In-Kind support offered I will be able to make the film, so thanks for looking and feel free to ask me any questions.

If you are outside of the USA and you are having problems backing the project then please read this page for a little insight.

I’m in a catatonic state of shock. Words can’t express thanks enough, but you’ll have to make do with a virtual bear hug (that’s obligatory), everything mentioned before. Plus a gold archery trophy with your name engraved on it as a small token of my thanks!!

I have been working in Film, TV, Art & Music for the past 10 years. Most recently I have been making music videos for bands like White Denim, Tunng, Wild Beasts, Cibelle & Devendra Banhart and mixing this with television and online documentaries for arts organisations such as the Tate, V&A and Barbican art galleries.

My goal has always been to direct fictional and documentary feature work and this short film is a step towards that.
