About this project
We are asking for you help to bring Park(ing) Day NYC to every borough this year! Park(ing) Day NYC supports New Yorkers as they convert parking spots throughout the city into people-friendly places for a single day. These small, temporary public spaces provide a breath of relief from the auto-clogged reality of New York City, and aim to spark dialogue about how we use our valuable public space.
In NYC, 80% of our public space is comprised of streets and sidewalks. On Park(ing) Day, New Yorkers reclaim street space and demonstrate how it can be designed to benefit more people. With funding for this project, Transportation Alternatives can engage community advocates, environmentalists, artists and NYC residents to recreate the urban landscape and reinvent public street space through Park(ing) Day NYC.
To make participating in the event available to a wide and diverse audience we will:
● Design and print outreach and promotional materials, maps of all the spaces for the day-of event and signs to identify the spots and the larger event.
● Pay for the required City Street Activity Permits.
● Provide Park(ing) Spot hosts reimbursement for parking fees at their location.
Unlike rallies or protests about environmental issues, Park(ing) Day NYC reaches people who have not necessarily thought directly about how street space and public space is used in the city. The focus of the day is to have fun, but also to educate and build support for more sensible policies that support better uses for our limited public space in New York City.
Park(ing) Day NYC is September 17th, 2010.
