24 Hours to go!  All non-US backers please add 15$ to your pledge for shipping!  Please check the updates and FAQ for all other information.

Product

Oblique is my take on the cantilever wine bottle holder.  It is precision machined from 6061 Aluminum & holds the bottle horizontally such that the center of mass is roughly above the middle of the footprint of the holder.  Thus, the bottle and holder are co-dependent on one another.  The design is a result of the 'balance' between the CNC milling machine process considerations, efficient material use, shipping constraints, aesthetics, and cost.  Oblique is designed in California, and manufactured in Minnesota.

I have been talking about kickstarting a product for over a year.  This project is my first and I would like to keep it short, simple, and sweet.

  • Short - This project ends December 12th! We are going to deliver the first production run by December 23rd.
  • Simple - We aren't splitting atoms folks, Just obeying Newton's 1st law. K.I.S.S. applies here.
  • Sweet - Not a bad looking wine bottle display if you ask me or the generous project backers to your right.

However, the devil is in the details and what really makes this product stand out is the +/- .002" tolerances on every dimension, the beauty of a face mill leaving behind perfectly uniform swirls on the part surface, and the superb made in the USA robotic craftsmanship that assures you no humans had a hand in any finishing or deburring because it would simply be too expensive!

Tight 45 degree chamfers on all edges and no witness lines to speak of on the part flip...

Background

Brett Swope is an engineer by training and a hack machinist.  A few years ago, Brett reached out to the internets and found Greg Suski at All Dimensions Manufacturing.  Greg and Brett have been working together closely for the past 6 years on dozens of projects and Greg has yet to miss a deadline or turn in an out of spec. part.  He is a hard-working, expert machinist who earns every dollar his shop makes by programming hard and fast toolpaths that deliver shock and awe.

Brett asked Greg if he would be interested in kickstarting a product that was designed to illustrate the precision, beauty, and elegance of his CNC milling machines and machining prowess.  After a long pause (with the spindles humming at 10K RPM in the background) Greg said, "I'm in" and here we are.

Rewards

We sincerely thank you for your generous donations to this project.  Please consult the reward area to the right in order to determine what donation and reward best suits you.

IMPORTANT STUFF

Anodizing - We will be contacting you after your pledge to ask if you would like anodizing and what color.  Pictures will be posted soon to illustrate color options.  Please be sure to respond promptly so that we can get your product right!

Shipping - All rewards are priced with shipping to one address.

International Shipping - Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee international delivery by 12/23.  If this is acceptable and you would like us to ship internationally, please add 15$ to your pledge.

THANK YOU!

Kickstarter is revolutionizing the way that products are introduced and manufactured.  No longer do entrepreneurs and inventors need to pony up every cent they have to invest in tooling (in addition to their sweat and time) their product ideas before they even understand the value in the eyes of the customer.  Now, we can vet out an idea and know that a critical mass of people (sponsors) think it is worthwhile to move forward with.  In exchange, sponsors are given first dibs on a new product along with the satisfaction that they are helping someone launch a product!  I sincerely thank all those who take the time to review this project and consider funding.

FAQ

  • If you would like us to ship you 1, 2, or 4 Oblique Wine Bottle Holders, please add 15$ to your pledge.  We will contact you to obtain your address and most international rewards will arrive sometime in January.  If you live in some really remote place that we can't ship to, we will contact you to let you know to cancel your pledge by December 11th.

  • No one actually asked this but I thought I would go ahead and say that the wine is not included in the rewards.

  • The 150$ reward is for one Grade 2 Titanium Oblique.  Titanium, although a very abundant metal on this planet, is really expensive.

  • If  X is anything except an unopened 750mL wine bottle.  I can't really say with confidence what the answer is so if you want to balance a champagne bottle, 2L bottle of soda, or a whisky bottle, I must ask you to assume the answer is no because I just don't know and I don't want you to be disappointed.  Oblique works with most unopened 750mL wine bottles.

  • I will try to get some anodized pictures up soon, but I can tell you that clear will look very similar to the pictures above and black will look like a medium-to-flat black, not glossy.  I am no interior designer but I would recommend the black for rustic or non-modern decor and the clear for a more modern look.  I am not even sure why I offered red.  I guess it is because every other Kickstarter project offers red as the 'special' reward.  Red will be a Bordeaux red, kind of a deep or dark red.

Connected as Bretton Swope (547 friends)

Bretton Swope - Engineer, hack machinist, robot enthusiast, and photography neophyte. I have been hacking together prototypes and taking apart machines for as long as anyone can remember. After earning a few pieces of paper proclaiming I am a mechanical engineer, I settled down in San Francisco and began working at a medical device startup company.

I enjoy creating things and am fortunate to earn my living building fascinating medical devices. Every once and awhile, however, I enjoy executing a fun and simple project to the perfection of my mind's eye. The Oblique is one of those projects.
