A film of poetry centered around twelve key Christian spiritual disciplines by spoken word poet David Bowden.
"12" is a film of poetry and passion about the harm, beauty, misconceptions, and necessity of spiritual disciplines in the life of a Christian.
AFTER A YEAR of writing and 6 months of filming we are ready to share this project with you. Many people who have been raised in faith or who encountered it later in life have, at one time or another, been 'put off' by one or more of the spiritual disciplines. We were taught and told that we don't pray enough or read our Bible's with enough frequency or fastidiousness. We often feel guilty about our lack of simplicity in a world of overwhelming consumerism and our ignorance or lack of enthusiasm when it comes to obscure Christian practices like fasting and meditation. We usually react to this guilt in one of two ways. Either we let the shame of our lack of religious performance push us away from pursuing a pious life, or we use that guilt as a motivating factor to try harder and judge those who are not as disciplined as we are. Either way, guilt and shame are unsatisfactory motivators for a devout life.
That is where this film comes in. We believe that there is another way of approaching a committed Christian life and it is that way that David seeks to illuminate through poetry in "12".
This film features twelve new poems and videos from spoken word poet, David Bowden. Based on his January 2012 audio release, "12", this film gives movement, visualization, and depth to the words and ideas of the studio album. Not only does this new film feature never before seen poetry videos, it also contains behind the scene chats with David about the inspiration, intent, and meaning behind each piece.
A Film for Individuals, Families, and Churches
"12" is a great film for fans of poetry who want a new way to interact with and be challenged by words. We also hope that families would be able to use it as common ground to initiate discussion and unity. Furthermore, this is the perfect DVD for youth ministers, pastors, or church leaders who want to use David's poems for lesson illustrations, a series outline, or discussion starters. However you choose to enjoy and use the film, we hope it is a challenge and inspiration to you and those you share it with.
We need your help to take the last big steps towards completing "12". We have to finish paying for post-production of the film, studio time and musicians for the original score, and manufacturing of the DVD. The bare minimum for all this is $5,000. If we can GO ABOVE OUR GOAL we will be able to bring more hands on deck for specialized fields of video editing, spend a few extra days in the studio making the soundtrack even more polished, and produce the physical DVD in the coolest packaging possible. Luckily this project is surrounded by skillful hands and committed minds. There will be challenges in finishing all the editing and scoring before our manufacturing deadline, but we have set ourselves to full-time work on this project in order to overcome this challenge. The biggest risk we are taking, if it wasn't the last 6 months of filming, is spending time in the studio and the production room without being funded first. We have gotten studios and editors, who believe in this project, to begin their work up front, leaving their pay dependent on the success of Kickstarter. But this is a risk that they and we are willing and ready to take. We believe that our fan-base and many wonderful congregations will be able to step up and make this goal a reality.
