Been gone, but Theramin: I don't think it would confuse anyone because this is visual and watching it work says it all. However, culturally, the only thing it brings to mind is cheesy sci-fi movies. Accordian has richer sound, richer history to draw from. Why can't a TV be fixed from parts of an accordion, depends what's broken, huh?

    9. Head_shot_1.thumb
Carol Oropallo on September 22, 2010

PLEASE stick with the accordion. I'm a writer - a generalist who has worked on just about everything except for screenplays. I'm certain that EVERYTHING about the theremin will distract from the story and it's heart. I see that others here are drawn to it because of it's sheer novelty - and I admit it's pretty cool. But novelty for novelty's sake is never a good idea when it comes to art. The accordion has it's own quirky charm and history - and fits perfectly with your charming setting and romantic story. Story is everything and may I offer you my motto in life: "Simplex Sigillum Veri." Simplicity is truth.

I think theremins are very cool, but even being somewhat familiar with it, I can't remember what it actually looks like. I vote accordion. I think confusion over the instrument will detract from the story more than it will add to it.

      Rikke H. on September 21, 2010

Tricky. I really like the idea of the theremin, but I must say I had no idea what it was, so it might confuse the audience if they have to figure out what the hell that thing she's playing is - or not really playing since she's not touching it. But I still like the idea tremendously in regards to the changes in the story. So if you can make the theremin come off so it makes sense that Josephine is playing it I'm all for it, because it's about one of the coolest instruments I've ever seen.

Cristina Ljungberg on September 20, 2010

I vote accordion. It will be difficult for most viewers to relate to the theramin and have any idea what it is. I think it will create a disconnect with the audience. It is so bizarre, even after watching the videos, I have no idea how it works, and am disappointed that it is an instrument with so little physical connection to the player.

I love the theramin idea. They may be less well-known than an accordian, but I'm hearing about them more and more (I first saw one on Yo Gabba Gabba).

I also like the way it fits into the story. I think you should go for it. :)

Theremin for sure... great idea. It'll give you a much more unique sound when you can incorporate it into the score. Love the TV idea and would be a great visual that's easily understandable by the audience. If you're concerned about the audience not understanding the instrument... find a way to give us a clue to it somewhere early in the film when we meet the characters... but simple, in the background... maybe a picture of of someone playing a theremin to large audience on a nightstand in the background... something so we know what the character is doing. (that's just a quick thought thought... go with what you like)

Saw John Spencer blues explosion back when I went to USC, the theremin isn't that far out there... but still one of the loudest shows I've ever seen and he rocks the theremin.

      Good luck

Also if you like the theremin idea... maybe you could approach

Definitly theremin! For many reasons in fact: it`s as much a French musical instrument as the accordion could look like, it`s quite moody and melancholic so it fits with the story and the idea of the theremin interacting with the TV is really clever and should not be spoiled. But let`s say you would have to stay with the accordion, there are a few electronic models that work with an amp and so on that you could still use the electric static trick within the movie...Here in Quebec, there has been a few years ago a quite succesful romantic comedy movie where one of the main character was playing theremin for a living, so it doesn`t seems so weird for people around here.
But as everyone says, you`re the boss, it`s your show, we gave you the opportunity to express your artistic vision, so go on as you see the best!...

Eric Brown on September 19, 2010

Well it wasn't Brian Williams who decided to use a theremin, it was Brian Wilson, so I'm all for it!

    17. Ericbio.thumb
Eric Brown on September 19, 2010

I think the theremin is a great idea. Did Brian Williams decide not to use a theremin on his Beach Boys album because it sounded too weird? No! He went forth with his artistic vision, which I think you should as well. There is the problem of changing the bill of sale after it's been sold. But ultimately, you're the artist, and it is your vision that was financed. That is, unless you decide that instead of roaches, they should be ants, and instead of animation, it should be people dressed up in ant suits, and a comedy instead of a romance, with a surprise twist at the end where the whole colony gets destroyed by an errant foot.

I was educated by you today on what a Theremin is. I passed it on to music people I know to test their knowledge skills.
I like your whole idea with the Theremin especially fixing the TV with it. I agree many people will not know what a Theremin is but what better way to learn? Unfortunately, I think it might be at your expense because most will not know and be confused. I don't see any way to incorporate the name of the instrument in your film so without the name most will be left in the dark and that will hurt your success.

I learned something new today. I had no idea what a Theremin was and went to the 2 you tube sites and still couldn't figure out what was going on so went to 2 sights where they built them and figured it out! I think it may be too distracting but I love your whimsy and have always felt the accordion to be a whimsical fabulous sound! Good Luck! I know you will make the perfect decision!

I like the theremin plot twist, but agree w/ others that as an instrument it's not visually recognizable. What if you have him playing an accordion that makes the sound of a theremin and interferes w/ his TV in the same way that you envisioned? It's a work of fiction, after all; why couldn't a roach accordion sound like a theremin and have unusual electric powers? My other concern is that the music sound good w/ the theremin. I love the audio bits I've heard so far w/ the accordion.

It is good to get input from others who appreciate your talent and creativity, and I agree with the other comments, but ultimately you should go with your "malpighian feeling".

I love the theramin, but it doesn't "display" well. No problem with an accordion or concertina. You could go old-world with a cimbalom, which I particularly like.

Jack Elmy on September 19, 2010

I was all for the theremin until I saw it. It's a cool idea, but it seems too sci-fi for the mood of the animation (as I perceive the mood anyhow). Many people will assume it's a fictional instrument. Unless you have the time in your film to explain it, make the audience okay with it, then I think it would just be a distraction. But again, super cool idea.

Elias Savada on September 19, 2010

Regarding Theremin vs. Accordion. I love the weirdness of the instrument and some, actually very few, people will recognize it. I'm too into film history to answer with the proper perspective of the person on the street who doesn't know the instrument. Not to throw it out completely (and it's a neat idea), what about some other electronic instrument that is more familiar and can do the same thing, interference wise.
