How Shadowrun spreads good karma...and even more music

Hoi Chummers,

yesterday was the official launch date for Jagged Alliance Online, so we are looking with bated breath at our user numbers and how people play the game. There is a lot of things we want to improve on, but we think it turned out pretty well so far.

However our SRO team is now growing at a good pace and thanks to your generosity, we were able to add a few people to the team (and get a fridge you can put more than two bottles and a leaf of lettuce in). We are working on the Level Design Tools (so creating missions is faster) and are detailing out the scope in more detail. We are also talking about multiplayer and endgame mechanics (so the game stays interesting even if you have played through the current content). We will always provide more content, but we also know we will rarely be able to keep up with the avid players out there eating through our carefully assembled content like it was a cotton candy.


Good Karma news

Back in the real world one of our prominent music contributors and early fans Walter Machado has been rewarded for his creative generosity. The exposure received from our spreading his music made a local Brazilian producer take notice and he actually got a deal for his Shadowrun oeuvre with the release of an album called Night Ride, you can find here. I think it is great SRO has been able to give back a bit for the great enthusiasm the project has received from composers around the world.

Speaking of composers - there are yet more creative people coming forward, so here is our latest entries for what no doubt will become an excellent soundtrack to any Shadowrun Session and may also part of SRO!

From Seattle, experimental musician and Shadowrun fan Ffej has brought his take on music for SRO.

And our friend Carlos Martin has been inspired by your feedback to offer new pieces here.

Renowned TV composer Patrick Rose has graced us with his take on Shadowrun as well.

And finally Ian Dorsch - also living near Seattle- included a Native American influence in his title Ghost Dance.

Remember- these talented people are always happy for feedback on their sites about their work, but please be polite and considerate.

We are really REALLY excited about all the talent collecting around SRO and we hope the exposure helps everyone who contributed so far.

We will soon collect the most promising submissions into a survey for you to vote on, so we can start working with the composers.

      I'd like to hear more DEVO, PIXIES, Nirvana, Lords of Acid, Orb, and Ween & less bad metal, less horrible techno, and less ... weak sauce sell-out bands.

      Last note -- anyone noticing that 'austerity measures' actually push people into "the sprawl" and split society into corp workers, indie workers, and jobless masses? Very cyberpunk/shadowrun style (without magic, far as I've seen).

      I know I'm a little behind on saying this but you should let players design missions as well with a dev tool or have a random mission generator with some slider bars so it's more tailored against the faction or group you want to go against. But I think this would help endgame be much more endless for players.

      Also, I think I like the idea of class specific themes... the Native American influence in Ian's track is a spot-on Street Shaman vibe.

      And a huge congrats to Walter Machado! Fantastic to see an artist actually benefit directly from his passion and the SRO community.

      It's awesome to see Walter getting so much recognition for his amazing talent - I'm more than happy to support him by picking up his album.
      I'm really digging Carlos' new piece as well. Also, Ghost Dance is not what I think of for a typical Shadowrun theme... but it's a great piece, and it definitely works for a Salish-Shidhe feel - well done!

      Player created missions, in an online game that will be at least a little competitive, are not something I can see happening soon. Shadowrun returns will be built toward this. SRO is a different kind of experience

      basically what Blackstaffsaid:)
      shadowrun.com allows you to add payments or increase pledges via paypal.
      And player created missions are not something we can manage for launch...while we would love to have them, it is clearly not an easy task, so better left to future updates.

      What will be amazing to have is Electro Industrial Music and EBM along with other brutal electronic style like Electro Dark or Harsh, they work very nice with cyberpunk and part of the main cyberpunk culture of today.

      Loved Carlos' track - the best demoed SR music so far IMO. Also enjoyed 'Snatch and Grab' by Patrick, although his other samples didn't do it for me. Ian's piece was creepily cool; would love to have that integrated into a Street Shaman setting somehow.

      I am not much on the experimental side of music, I must say, so the first one is not really my cup of tea.
      I very much like the shadowrun theme of Carlos Martin, less the other titles, but that one fits very well.
      I think there is something to be done with the style of the third one, electro-pop rock style, but I am not that convinced by the tracks, even though "surveying the sprawl" is good.
      And the fourth one seems to me to be a great track for amerindian atmosphere and runs.
      @Jeremy Bland If you forgot to add 15 bucks for shipping, you can come to the shadowrun.com site and use the paypal SRO to donate it. If you use the same mail adress there, they can track you back to add it with your kickstarter pledge.
      For the mission player-written content, they said many times before that it was really hard for them to check this kind of content. So I don't think there is much hope to see it at the end. Though, it would also be tough for the dragon pledgers if anybody could write his mission in the game :)

      Carlos's new piece, which seems to have been uploaded around the same time as the previous offering, fits WAY BETTER. Awesome song. Definitely has the tech edge with the orchestral components that I think suits this world way better. Very cool stuff. The fact that they were put up around the same time shows that he had in it mind. I dig.

      @William Arndt, very good idea. It's something that Cliffhanger should think about. And i can add to that idea some kind of player-created-NPC-system, where players can hire for "solo" missions NPC's created by other players, something like the Pawn System from Dragon's Dogma.

      It might be something to consider, in letting players create and or offer missions.. sort of like the Foundry on Star Trek Online, or the new in development and beta Neverwinter D&D owned by Perfect World Entertainment. If you develop robust tools that let's players build mission's for others.. with a rating system and some safeguards (like you can only do any player created mission once every 24-48 hours, per mission. So that way it avoids abuses) and it would open the door to stemming that creative taxation that a company encounters, because there is only so much content able to be created.. (I would urge you looking into it and what it would take.. to make happen even if it's only to game it out and see if it's viable.)
