FourPlay Theater (a new company in residence at Chicago's hippest loft) presents a new and edgy version of the classic musical Cabaret!
"Cabaret" by John Kander and Fred Ebb opened originally in 1966, won the Tony for best musical, was produced as a film in 1972 starring Liza Minelli, and was revived on Broadway in 1987 and 1998. The classic musical, which takes place in 1930's Berlin, draws us into the seedy Kit Kat Klub and, over the course of the show, engulfs its audience in the growing political tension spawned by the Nazi movement. The "Klub", which enables social and political escapism for those who do not want to face the reality of their time and place, eventually collapses under the weight of the biological racism of the Nazi regime.
In our production, we hope to modernize these themes by playing with time and physicality within our performance space, blurring the lines between then and now, as well as bridging the gap between reality and artifice.
"Cabaret" plays May 18th, 19th, 24th, 25th, and 26th with a preview on May 17th. More details to come!
