About this project

FUNDED!!!

I couldn't have done it without all of you folks supporting me!  Last night, the campaign reached 104% and will be funded!  Now that we reached the Funding Goal, the Overfunding Goals are in play: For everyone who contributed $50 or more, I will draw a Zombie card of you!  If the Campaign reached $3,000, I will include a refrigerator magnet of your card with your other perks for anyone who contributed $100 or more!  If the campaign passes $3,000, I will have to think of something else...  Suggestions?  Thanks again to everyone who has supported me and TalkingBull Games!!!

TalkingBull Games

Who Am I? - My name is Jonathan and I am a soldier currently deployed to Afghanistan.  In my off-time, I have been working hard to design a game that I could play with my friends.  I came up with a Pirate-themed card game which everyone really enjoys playing.  Since the game is so popular, I would like to continue working on games and getting them out there!  That's where Kickstarter comes into play!

My Goal - I love designing games.  I have been doing it for years and only recently have I decided to take my artistic and gaming talents to the public.  I want to create a website to showcase my products and I also want to have enough copies of my game printed so I can send it to publishers in order to have them put it on store shelves.  With enough money, I will be able to have a website professionally designed and maintained.  This is something I am not able to do given my location at the moment so I need help!  I have a few hours each night to work on my games but without a connection to the Internet in my tent, I can't run a website.  That's where your donations will help!

My Thanks - To thank you for your donation, I will feature a sponsor page on my website where I will list your name under the appropriate section and provide a link to your website!  Additionally, I will feature your name in the rulebook for Pieces of Eight!  For higher donations, I will be able to have copies of my specially-designed poker deck and/or a copy of my game sent to you!  For the really generaous donations, I will draw you into my game, Pieces of Eight!

The Future - As I get my company off the ground, I will continue to make games that I think people will love! I am working on a Zombie game right now with some new mechanics I have never before seen in a card game. I also have some historically-themed card and board games in development as well as some strategy-based Space games!

*Sorry for the lack of video.  At the moment, I don't have Intrenet access where I could create and upload a video... but I am working on it!  In the meantime, I plan on uploading some cards that I have done :)

** For International Backers - Please add $15 to your contribution to cover additional shipping costs for donations of $25 or more.

UPDATE: 11 February, 2012

OVERFUNDING REWARD

With one week remaining and it looking like this campaign will be funded, I thought I would offer an additional overfunding goal/perk! Once the campaign reaches $3,000, I will include a refrigerator magnet of your unique Zombie or Pirate card for anyone who contributed $100 or more!

So everyone who contributed $100 will have a Zombie card drawn for them (Based on my 28 Jan update below) and anyone who donates $200 or more will have a Pirate card! Just let me know which (If you are getting both) you would like and I will include it as a magnet with your other perks!

UPDATE: 28 January, 2012

OVERFUNDING REWARD

With just over three weeks remaining in my campaign and already holding above 60% of my goal, I have come up with an overfunding reward for some of my backers!

Once I reach my funding goal and begin receiving more contributions, I will draw a Zombie card for everyone who donated $50 or more! This will be for my upcoming game, ZOMBIES! You Won't Survive The Night which should hopefully be completed within the next couple of months. I can't guarantee that the card I draw for each backer will end up in the final game since I am going to limit the number of Zombies at first. What may happen is that I will either use the card for an expansion once the game is released or I will use the drawing in promotional art. Either way, I will send you a high-resolution image of the card for your enjoyment :)

Like my other drawing-based rewards, I will need a picture of you from which to draw your likeness. You can send the pic to TalkingBullGames@Gmail.com and I will use the photo as a reference when I draw your likeness. Go ahead and pose in your favorite "Zombie Pose" and I will use that.

This is somewhat of a self portrait and an example of what your card might look like!

FAQ

  • The game is set up so that each player takes command of a pirate ship as a different captain. There are 10 different captains in the game which are based off of actual historic figures and each one has a different ability which will help them to play the game.

The object of the game is to be the first player to get 8 doubloons (Or Pieces of Eight). To do this, you must go on raids of towns, forts, ships at sea, and other players. These are randomly drawn from the deck. In order to go on raids, you have to employ a crew. Crewmen are also drawn from the deck and placed on your ship so that you can build an attack/defense strangth. Power changes often and you can find yourself winning one moment and then down the next as there are a number of cards which will kill off crewmen or keep you from succeeding. The basic turn sequence is to draw a card, follow the instructions on it (It could be a crewman, supply, event, or raid). Play continues until the first person reaches 8 Pieces of Eight.

I have found that the more people you have playing the game, the more fun it is since people will team up to keep someone from winning... only to turn on their allies in order to win themselves!

Here is the description I have for the game that I plan to put on the back of the box:

"Pieces of Eight - Steal the Booty! Drink the Rum!

The life of a Pirate Captain is a hard one. You have been sailing the seas since you were but a child and the time has come to retire! Alas, you need money to retire… and that means it’s time to plunder, raid, drink, and sail!

Players bring on crewmembers to help in raids against Forts, Towns, and Ships to help build the captain’s treasure! Each player builds their crew by hiring some of the foulest, dirtiest, and roughest pirates they can find. From raids to ships, forts, towns, and each other’s vessels, this game is jam-packed with pirate excitement!

Will you be the one to take the gold and win the game? Will you sink to the bottom of the briny deep and spend eternity in Davy Jones’ Locker? Only the cards and the dice can tell in this game of strategy and chance!

Choose from one of ten famous Pirates. Each comes with their own special bonuses or traits that can help you to your goal! Each player’s experience will be different in this game of piracy upon the high seas."

  • I am currently working on two separate projects.  One is a Zombie card/dice game which is a lot of fun to work on.  I am drawing my friends as zombies and it's been more fun than I thought it would be.  I know the market is absolutely flooded with Zombie games right now ubt this game offers several new mechanics which I feel make it unique in the marketplace.

In addition to the Zombie game, I am also developing a Civil War Card Battle Game.  That game is basically fully designed but still needs to be drawn and playtested so it could be a few months before it is complete.

Beyond those projects, I have several on the back-burner.  A Roman battle game which will be similar to the Civil War game.  A Space Battle board game which is mostly developed but still needs some tweaking.  I am also developing a board game which will be all about ants!

For me, the best part about designing these games is that I have a lot of fun making them.  Hopefully, I will be able to produce them to share with the world via thisKickstarter campaign but until then, I have had a lot of fun playing and playtesting with my soldiers :)

  • Yes!  Unfortunately, I didn't consider this when I started this campaign so please add $15 to cover shipping costs for any donation of $25 or more.

  • Currently, I am using a "Pay to Print" site called TheGameCrafter which allows you to create all sorts of games and you only have to pay to have a single copy printed.  This is both good and bad.  Good because you can fully develop a game to send to a publisher as a fully-playable prototype and bad because there is no way to do a mass-distribution through their site other than to order hundreds or thousands of copies yourself and distribute them as needed.  Additionally, in order to keep the costs low, there is very little profit margin (Usually about $0.12 - $0.75 ) which makes the desire to publish through a brick and mortar distributor much more appealing.

  • The names of the various contribution levels come from the game.  In order or card-importance to gameplay, there is a Stowaway, Mate, Doctor, Carpenter, Quartermaster, and finally the Captain.

  • The Deluxe Edition of the game has all of the original game components as well as 10 additional cards that are not included in the regular version, additional parts which help the gameplay, a parts/dice bag, and a specially-designed box (The regular version comes in a generic box).

I created the Deluxe Edition because as I was making the regular version of the game, I had to sacrifice parts to keep the cost low. I figured I would make a larger version with all of the parts I initially wanted to include in the original and throw in some cards I was unable to include in the original.

  • The game can be played with 2-5 players.  I have found that 3-4 players are the best... when you have 4-5 players, the game is a lot of fun and very competitive but it takes a long time to play.  Generally, a 2 player game is about 30 minutes long... for each player you add, it generally adds about 15 minutes to the gameplay.
