About this project
BROWNSTAR is proud to have been accepted to the 14th annual New York International Fringe Festival, where it will present the world premiere of its new show, "FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF WHITE." A "sci-fi memoir fueled by high-energy comedy," the show is written and performed by South Asian spoken-word duo, BROWNSTAR (Pushkar Sharma & Sathya Sridharan), and set to live music by composer/performer Charles Kim.
Performing FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF WHITE at FringeNYC will further BROWNSTAR's mission of igniting a dialogue about the South Asian American experience. In order to produce the show, BROWNSTAR seeks to raise funds to cover production expenses. Expenses include paying for rehearsal space, marketing costs, FringeNYC participation fees, production design elements (i.e. lighting, costuming), and modest stipends for production staff (i.e. director, stage manager).
A rising star in the Asian-American artistic community, BROWNSTAR has been described by spoken-word pioneer Giles Li as “carrying on the legacy of the great storytellers across generations." Since 2007 BROWNSTAR has performed to diverse audiences at universities and poetry venues across America. Their leadership in the South Asian American community has best been demonstrated by their production of UNIFICATION, a joint celebration of the Pakistani and Indian Independence Days in New York City. For the second year in a row, BROWNSTAR has assembled a diverse lineup of prominent and emerging South Asian artists to unite the community and fund raise for community organizations.

Described by spoken-word pioneer and founder of the Boston Progress Arts Collective, Giles Li, as "carrying on the legacy of the great storytellers across generations” BROWNSTAR is a spoken-word duo based at the origin of the American revolution: in Boston, Massachusetts.
A rising star in the Asian-American artistic community, BROWNSTAR merges high-energy comedy, personal memoir, and science fiction to ignite a discourse about the South Asian American community and give a generation its voice and song.
BROWNSTAR bursts forth from the pens of poet-performers Pushkar "NORTH STAR" Sharma and Sathya "SOUTH STAR" Sridharan, who joined together in 2007. The duo has performed at universities and poetry venues across the US, and will be premiering their stage show "FASTER THAN THE SPEED OF WHITE" at the New York City International Fringe Theatre Festival in August 2010. BROWNSTAR produced UNIFICATION 2009 a joint celebration of the Indian and Pakistani Independence Days in Manhattan in August 2009 and will reprise the show in New York in 2010; they have shared the stage with the likes of Def Poets Kelly Tsai, Reggie Cabico, and Taylor Mali, emcees Magnetic North, Taiyo Na, and iLL-Literacy, and comedians Hari Kondabolu and Aparna Nancherla.
