I am happy to make a contribution to a neighborhood I patrolled as a cop in the early 90's. Kudos to those that are making a positive change.

I was inspired to back this project because of the incredible urban farm at the community college where I teach (video production classes). http://www.sdcity.edu/SeedsAtCity The sense of pride the community will feel for this land will be overwhelming. Can't wait to name one of the chickens in honor of a pet chicken I had as a child.

I'm a volunteer here and try to help out Masha and Vinny in any small way I can. I can tell you that they are two of the most dedicated, resourceful, inspiring people I've ever met. We need way more Masha and Vinnys in this world. They know how to squeeze more out of every penny, every resource, every inch of land. And they've created a beautiful space that gets people's attention. It's amazing how receptive the community is when you engage them. This is something I really believe in.

Here's why I do: take the environmental good of an urban farm (green space = cleaner air!) providing local, organic produce (an actual healthy alternative) to people who wouldn't otherwise have access. Now add to that how we work with schools and the community to educate children and families. We don't get any money from the government or have any rich backers. It's completely community funded and it all goes right back into the community. If something like this can exist, I think it says a lot for us all.

That's why I'd like to encourage strangers to donate. If you've never heard of us. If you've never been to New York City. If you've never donated to anything before. If you are—like I was—overwhelmed by how many charities and good causes there seem to be out there. Please jump in.

I know for the longest time I couldn't decide which cause was more deserving than any other and how I could know my money would be put to good use. That's why I love this project. It addresses so many different social challenges every single day in real measure with local effort and visible results.

And with this new lot—if we can make it happen—with a chicken run, veggie garden, fruit tree orchard (!) and recreational area, I think it would be the tipping point to a completely transformed neighborhood. One where people believe that good things are still possible.

I know not many people can give right now but if you can, that means we need your help even more. If you can't though, please spread the word to anyone you can. That can be just as great a help. Thanks for reading!

P.S. the chickens said to say "thank you" too

It's really an amazing spot with a lot of potential. I had a great time picking up trash, digging and planting with the neighborhood kids. Just needs a lot of fresh dirt!
