A 4-disc set of mostly original folk and blues recordings including a 12-page informational booklet.
This is the second posting for my project; A History of Blues. The project, minus the actual pressing and packaging, has been completed. In other words, CD mastering, artwork, photography, design and research has been completed. Now all that is needed is for the project to be pressed and packaged. My goal is to press 500 units. A History of Blues consists of 48 songs on 4 CDs of which almost all are original. An individual CD case for each CD. A main slipcase to keep them all together. A 12-page booklet with lyrics and a history of when the song was written, where and when it was recorded and who performed on the session, and a few historic photos. The recordings originate from five recording sessions. The 820 sessions, the Last Blue Note Sessions, the If Trouble Was Money Sessions, the South Side of Blue Sessions, and then there are those songs that were randomly written and recorded over the years, location and date unknown.
A History of Blues is a life-long dream of of mine. I am a singer/songwriter, author, artist, and a nationally recognized cultural event coordinator. Over my long musical career I have never released a CD. I did release a couple of cassettes back in the early 80s and a few cuts are from those sessions. A History of Blues is a compilation of mostly original songs that were composed and recorded beginning in the 1970s up through the 1990s. I have had the pleasure to have performed with, and recorded with, some of the greatest unsung heroes of the blues world alive today. The great majority of the songs featured in the 4-disc project were recorded in the Syracuse, NY region. The quality of the musicianship is truly world-class. Artists like George Rossi (Little Georgie & The Shuffling Hungarians) on piano and organ, Paul "Big Daddy" LaRonde (toured with John Lee Hooker, was a member of The Kingsnakes, Built for Comfort, and Little Georgie's band) and T.A James (toured with Carey Bell and was a member of the Kingsnakes) on bass, Tom Townsley (host of WAER Sunday Night Blues for 25 years and a prominent Syracuse band leader/singer/songwriter), Matt Tarbell (harp player/lead vocalist for the Corvairs and Built for Comfort), and Mike Petroff (singer/harp player for Lake Effect Blues Band) on harmonica, Mark Tiffault (toured with John Lee Hooker, was a member of The Kingsnakes, Built for Comfort, and Little Georgie's band) on drums, bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnett Grimm are currently touring with Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. They perform on the live from Shifty's cuts along with keyboardist Scott Ebner. These and the other fine musicians are really the stars of this compliation. As for myself, Jim Murphy, AKA Austin Jimmy Murphy, I had the tremendous honor to have these musicians perform my material and provide guidance to what I believe is an exception collection of songs.
The premise of the project was to go back through old recording projects dating back to the early 1970s and select a few of the best takes and release a nostalgic CD. What this journey uncovered was a treasure-trove of unreleased material. Some songs were recorded solo with me either performing instrumentals or a guitar and voice through a single mic in bedrooms and living rooms in apartments I lived in throughout the years. Other material is the result of a few people getting together in informal studio sessions recording live to analog tape. As time went by, later sessions were recorded digitally. The final outcome is an amazing collection of blues and folk material.
This large volume of music is not a complete recorded history, but I think it is an important select group of mostly original material that has great merit. 4 discs is a lot of music, I agree. But, in closing, I have to say that every song chosen is unique and deserves to be heard and enjoyed by blues and folk afficianados.
