A veteran meets an artist. A conversation happens. A print is made. It's workshop time...you can help make it happen.
We See What You're Saying
For the last year, Veteran Print Project has been linking veterans with artists to engage in a dialogue that would result in the production of a fine art print based on the veteran's story. Over 38 prints have been completed. Each veteran has received a copy of his or her print and the artists have received portfolios of the editions they have participated in. In its second year, Veteran Print Project is exploring phase two of its journey. This phase includes the development and implementation of its workshop format. This is where we need your help. We have been given the green light to conduct a workshop for veterans in Madison, Wisconsin in the fall of 2012. This workshop will be the prototype for Veteran Print Project workshops in the future. The workshop will include veterans and artists gathered together to engage in conversation that will lend itself to the development of visual aids used to create a group print. Your participation in this campaign will secure supplies and materials for the workshop. It will also assist in the matting and framing of existing prints in the Project to be on display at the workshop and future exhibitions.
The goal of Veteran Print Project is to create forums for open dialogue among veterans and their community. This forum visually calls attention to the veteran experience as one that demands the attention that cannot remain outside public consciousness.
Statement from veteran, artist and founder Yvette M. Pino:
Most veterans feel that people don’t understand us because they have never experienced what we have experienced. Although I had a support system, I felt saddened by the fact that I could no longer relate to peers outside of my veteran circle. I had experienced so many more traumas in my life and I knew that I needed to learn how to reconnect or begin new connections with non-military people. I want the conversations to continue. Until we learn to talk with one another we will have ignorant opinions about each other. We must ask questions. We must share answers. We must always have dialogue.
We are seeking out the stories to visualize the history of our veterans. Sometimes we have to see it to believe it. We cannot aim to tell everyone’s story at once; but the few that come forward and speak up first will prompt others to have the courage to stand up and claim their part of history.
I experienced some really crazy things. War is war. But war, in my opinion, is filled with passion, heart, tears, love, camaraderie, devotion, endurance, and insanity. If art can capture just a sense of that, then we are on the right track.
