But, we can't stop there.  I am not sure if we are a group of crazy geniuses or just gluttons for punishment, but we had an amazing idea last night.  Let's make our light show even bigger and badder!  If we could raise another $2,000 here in the next three weeks, we would be able to expand our light module.  This would give us added channels of control, the ability to have multiple sound triggers (instead of our original design of one), and more levels of dimming.   Luminous Passage 2.0 would be even more dynamic than originally conceived, shining brighter and more full of life on the playa.  Please consider helping us get to our new goal of $6,000. ***

Luminous Passage is a collaborative effort between Architecture/Design firm based in Santa Monica, CA (the original creators) and Marc Anderson and Jason Predock (the instigators) of San Francisco.

As the instigators of the continuation of this project, Marc and Jason feel that Luminous Passage is a perfect match for Burning Man given the original intention of the piece. Predock-Frane Architects intended it to be a transitional experience from land to sea as you walk through it from the boardwalk (land) to the water’s edge (sea). We feel that transplanting Luminous Passage to the playa will perpetuate the concept and original drive of the piece. Although this piece has been on public display before, the next iteration is more advanced and far more interactive than before. We have integrated sound response functions and dynamic lighting design into the visual display, encouraging passersby to interface and play with it. The scale befits Burning Man perfectly, finding a footprint on the playa amongst other large scale pieces. We have also integrated a low voltage solar power system making LP green and silent.

The Design:

From the distance, the piece begins with serial vertical lines and gradually transitions and twists toward the horizontal. Emerging from the tunnel of glowing lines at the end, a space is defined akin to the classic California beach campfire - a gathering spot - where the wildness of the playa can be observed from under a glowing canopy. The overall piece is interactive at several levels. As a spatial construct, movement through the piece is transformational and sensate. Along the terminal plane of the piece the EL wires hang more loosely which naturally act as a field of motion in the wind. As a funnel and gathering space this encourages social grouping and interaction. From discreet angles the piece is perceived in different ways, from the sides appearing as a bridge-like element that filters movement up and down the playa, while from end to end a tube of space linking city to the great unknown of the playa. 

As you approach Luminous Passage at night from a distance, you see the appearance of a massive series of glowing vertical lines of light floating in space in a precise geometric pattern that transition from the entrance facing the city to the exit, opening to the Man. The entrance is a passage of 16’ high lines that lower, cross in on each other and open at the other end to a “tented” communal space. Different colored wires define each side of the channel and the terminus. The corridor is approx 6’ wide. As voice levels change and other noisemaking objects pass by, the piece reacts to the sounds with light transitions, creating a dynamic experience for the people inside and a sort of beacon for travelers outside of it, drawing them to it. Depending on the intensity of sound, the piece reacts differently.

LP is a 200’ long x 50’ wide x 16’ tall light installation made from sono concrete tube forms, aircraft cable and electroluminescent wire (EL wire). It is 50’ at its widest part and 6’ wide at the narrowest. At night, only the EL wire is visible.

Burning Man helped us begin to make this dream a reality.  We are very honored that they have chosen us as Honorarium for this year's event.  While they have pledged to give us a small amount towards our expenses, we will need more help to successfully get Luminous Passage 2.0 to the playa.  We thank you for your help and your support in our vision.
