A feature-length documentary about Tatsuya Shindo, a former mobster turned preacher, and his congregation of ex-convicts and outsiders.
About JUNE BRIDE: REDEMPTION OF A YAKUZA:
This project is no ordinary gangster story romanticized in Hollywood and Japanese movies. It is a real life story with honest struggles of a man seeking forgiveness for a life’s worth of disappointment and crime.
June Bride: Redemption of a Yakuza is a feature-length documentary about Tatsuya Shindo, a former mobster turned preacher and his rundown church, at one time a smoked-filled bar, where ex-convicts and outsiders congregate to start over. June Bride is a hard-hitting story of an underdog’s journey from the criminal underworld to a mission from God. (Hopefully, without the fate of The Blues Brothers.)
The film is being produced by Fish Grenade Productions, which last produced The Killing of a Chinese Cookie, a feature-length documentary that cracked into the true origin of the fortune cookie and provided a light-hearted look at a simple pastry to a pop culture phenomenon. thekillingofachinesecookie.com
About TATSUYA SHINDO:
It’s hard to imagine this thin-framed man with devilish chin stubble and tattoos on his body could sever his allegiance from the head of his family in the yakuza, Japan's crime syndicate. After two decades establishing himself as a high-ranking member, Shindo, during his third stint in prison, reevaluates his life and embraces a new calling, as God's gangster. He says, "Loyalty to my yakuza boss is the same as the one to God." From the pulpit, he ministers to other former yakuza and offers guidance for redemption. God is his boss now.
With two successful books published, “You Can Always Start Over” and “The Mafia Minister’s Street Talk”, Shindo’s life is nothing short of inspirational.
In February, a preliminary trip was made to Tokyo, Japan with the intent of pre-interviewing and documenting potential storylines. Over the next week or so, the cautious parishioners welcomed the production team and warmed to the idea of sharing their stories on camera.
Two weeks after returning home to Los Angeles, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake devastated Japan leaving over 20,000 people dead or missing which left the future of the project in question. After a brief setback and much heartfelt consideration, we are back in pre-production for our next trip to Japan. Now more than ever, as the country recovers, the story of June Bride and Shindo deserves to continue.
Be part of this engaging documentary. Be involved with Shindo’s story. With your help June Bride: Redemption of a Yakuza can inspire from the big screen!
