Help celebrate the one-year anniversary of the overthrow of dictator Ben Ali!
Hi everyone,
Tomorrow, January 14, 2012, marks the one-year anniversary of the overthrow of Tunisian dictator Ben Ali.
Tunisia’s was a liberation sparked by one man’s shocking public protest against injustice through self-immolation and fueled by the power of citizen journalism and social media. It was a liberation that grew from thousands of Tunisians joining together to make their voices heard; a liberation that sparked similar revolutions across the Arab world in what would become known as the Arab Spring.
On the eve of this important day in Tunisian history, the Speak Out Tunisia team believes more than ever that building a free and fair press in Tunisia is a critical step toward a better Tunisia. And your support is crucial in taking that step. As Tunisian PaCTE president Sami Ben Hassine says,“There is a new democracy in the works in Tunisia, and you are a part of it!”
We are in the critical last phase of our campaign. With 11 days left, we still need to raise $7500 to make Speak Out Tunisia happen. We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support we’ve received for this project from all over the world. Tunisians young and old contact us daily asking how they can participate in our training workshop in March. Media outlets in France, Tunisia and the United States have featured our project online and on the radio. We have presented Speak Out Tunisia at major media conferences and fundraisers in the U.S., France, Tunisia and Japan and received enormous praise for our efforts.
But in the end, if we don’t reach $19000 by January 25, all of the pledges we’ve received from you thus far will be forfeited, and Speak Out Tunisia will just be a great idea that a lot people believed in but that didn’t come to fruition.
I noticed today that more than 800 people “like” Speak Out Tunisia on Facebook right now. It occurs to me that if just half of those people would donate $20 each, we would reach our goal immediately. Unfortunately, turning “likes” into actions isn’t always easy.
If you believe in this project, please consider increasing your pledge amount during these final days of our campaign. Consider doubling your pledge even.
On this one-year anniversary of Tunisia’s liberation from dictatorship, help us take one small but important step toward democracy by beginning to build a skilled, ethical and free press in Tunisia.
Thanks again for your support. We couldn’t do this project without you.
