The Speak Out Tunisia citizen journalism training project aims to return the power of a free and fair press to the people of Tunisia.
WHAT IS SPEAK OUT TUNISIA?
Speak Out Tunisia is a citizen journalism training project that aims to teach a diverse group of Tunisian citizens about digital media and online journalism. After 23 years of oppression without a free press under Dictator Ben Ali, Speak Out Tunisia seeks to return the power of a free and fair press to the Tunisian people. We will be training two groups of citizens-- one beginner group and one advanced group -- for four weeks in the capital city of Tunis and a rural location in Tunisia.
WHO ARE WE?
The Speak Out Tunisia team consists of a passionate group of Tunisians dedicated to building a free press and democracy in Tunisia after the overthrow of Dictator Ben Ali on January 14, 2011. It also includes Anne Medley, a photojournalist and videographer based in the United States who teaches multimedia journalism workshops around the world.
Speak Out Tunisia was created, in large part, by Tunisian PaCTE (Pacte des Compétences Tunisiennes Engagées), a citizen project formed immediately after the revolution to bring together Tunisians and supporters to help build a better Tunisia. In the days following the revolution, thousands of Tunisians living, working and studying around the world joined Tunisian PaCTE, bringing the total number of supporters to more than 6500 members and counting.

WHO WILL LEAD THE PROJECT?
Anne Medley will be the lead instructor for Speak Out Tunisia. Anne launched a similar multimedia education project "Congo in Focus" in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2010. You can read more about that project and Anne's experience at the bottom of the rewards section.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?
Lots! Planning, brainstorming, coordinating with teams in Tunisia and abroad, consulting with experts, etc. At the moment, we're in the final phase of the project -- fundraising and recruiting trainees. We're working with local universities and city halls in Tunisia to secure the best training facilities for our future students.
WHAT WILL YOUR MONEY FUND?
This project isn't possible without you. We've put together a bare-bones budget that aims to consume little and impact lots. Your money will go straight toward one of the following:
- Digital equipment (cameras, video cameras, audio recorders, editing software, computers) for this training program (all equipment will be kept and used for future courses)
- Rental of conference hall and program expenses for closing ceremony press conference with students in Tunis (we will provide live streaming of the ceremony)
- Airfare, basic accommodations, food and stipend for four weeks in Tunisia for lead instructor
