Step by Step eGuide to Oxford, that voice in your ear leading you through its treasures well known and hidden, first in a unique series
The attitude of the British toward the history that is all around them leaves me pleasantly puzzled. Each pub claims a connection to a famous person. Ruined castles fall from almost every hill. Hadrian's Wall meanders through northern fields and, oh, yeah, over there is another building by Christopher Wren. For some reason all of these things made me, a Southern girl by way of California, feel as though I had come home the first time my feet touched English soil.
Throughout our lives only a few places will speak to our souls. Oxford is one of those places for me. I would like to share it with others. I want to be the voice in their ears that says, "Turn here, there's a great pub down the alley. Stop in this shop, let me introduce you to the owner. Look down, there's a piece of history in the paving stones."
Previously I've written and self-published an essay about men who sank their "redundancies" (severance pay) into opening micropubs as well as a guidebook on walking from Marina del Rey to Venice Beach. I've learned a bit about both ebook formatting and photography since writing the travel book. Now I would like to put those lessons to use by writing
Step by Step eGuide: A Walking Tour of Oxford
The premise is simple. People should be able to download the book to their Kindles, phones or ereaders of choice and follow it through a turn by turn walk around Oxford. All of the well known landmarks will be covered: the Ashmolean, Christ Church, the Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe Camera, the list goes on and on. Of course, the covered market and the pubs (and, oh yes, scrumpy) will also be there, as well as lesser known nooks and crannies and local idiosyncratic games such as Aunt Sally. It will cover affordable ways to get from London to Oxford as well as cheap (hostel) and affordable (bed and breakfasts) places to stay while in Oxford. Lots of pictures, lots of tips you can only get from someone who has been there. If I don't actually see it and/or do it, it won't be included. A link to a pin pointed map will also be available.
At the moment my intent is to make it available only in ebook form at a price between five and seven dollars. Periodic updates will be available for 99 cents each.
The same trip will also provide the pictures and information needed to write three Quick Step eGuides.
Quick Step eGuide to Getting around Hearthrow Airport
Quick Step eGuide to Hosteling and One Bag Packing for Older Travelers
Quick Step eGuide to Famous Oxford Pubs
These will all be available as ebooks for 99 cents each..
Hopefully, this will help establish the Step by Step brand. Books detailing walks around Hadrian's Wall and Holy Island are potential future offerings.
The budget for the trip (including a camera upgrade) is $2,966 including rewards and Kickstarter fees. Any funds collected over the project's goal will be used to enhance the book's content and presentation.
