Hi. It’s Dave again. Thanks for watching our presentation. We had fun making it and I hope you enjoyed the humorous tone, but I in all seriousness this project is very dear to me.
I have a great passion for these Sherlock Holmes mysteries. In the original products we really had to crush the video to make it fit and Holmes deserves so much better. I’d love to re-master these games for modern systems with the kind of video you saw in the excerpts. I’d love to do this for both existing Holmes fans and to attract new fans that may not be familiar with how much fun it is to solve mysteries, especially in this style of a game. You see this is a very different type of game than most people are used to.
It revolves around using game "tools" where you choose who/what to investigate and where to direct Holmes and Watson to solve a mystery that appears to be stumping even Scotland Yard. Using some of these tools costs you "clue points." Your goal is to solve the case in the fewest number of clue points as possible. Perusing the four newspapers does not cost you clue points and is a great way to gather your initial set of clues. Then, use that information (along with the London Directory) to decide where to send the famous detectives (or the local ruffians – the Baker Street Irregulars) to solve these cases. Watching pertinent scenes and scouring Holmes’ files will cost you clue points but may very well reveal the evidence you need to bring your case before the Queen’s magistrate! These games are great fun and are something you can even enjoy with friends and family as you solve each mystery. For More info on how the game plays, see the update tab above!
Well, that’s about it. We want to be good stewards of your pledges so I have posted in the FAQ at the bottom of the page exactly where the money would go if we hit our goal and if we went over.
I hope you will back us in this effort and in return enjoy the special rewards exclusively for backers that you can read about below. Thanks again.
Now, come Watson, on to the rewards!
This pledge is open to an unlimited number of people. When the games are completed, we will provide links to download ALL nine exclusive Mac or PC versions of the Sherlock Mysteries - each featuring more than 30 minutes of video! If possible, we will allow you to download the mysteries as they are produced so you won’t have to wait!
9 Video Adventure Mysteries via an exclusive download!
Each mystery will utilize a number of in-game tools. You can find clues to solve each crime by reading the Times, tracking down suspects in Holmes' directory and, more importantly, viewing the detectives in action. Using the notebook, you can keep a running log of clues before finally presenting and defending your case before the Queen's magistrate!
Use your in-game tools to solve each mystery!
With this pledge, you’ll get the previously-mentioned downloads plus a digital DRM-free soundtrack by composer Greg Brown called “The Consulting Concerto.” This ten-track download will feature ALL NEW music based on each of the mysteries.
You’ll be added to the in-game credits as, appropriately enough, a Hound of the Baskervilles – based on Doyle’s third Holmes novel and inspired by the legend of a not-to-be-trifled-with fearsome dog!
A musical masterpiece based on a menagerie of mysteries!
You get ALL nine mysteries on your Apple IOS or Android portable device of choice (phones and tablets). These mysteries will be released to you as we publish them. You will also be listed in the credits as one of Moriarty's Henchmen (or Henchwomen if you prefer :) and all the previous rewards.
Sleuthing at its finest - at your fingertips!
Like the first three, this tier is offered to an unlimited number of people who want to be credited as working for the illustrious Scotland Yard. Here, you get the previous pledge tiers, plus you’ll also get an oversized recreation of a Times newspaper from 1889. We will ask you to supply your name (or the name of a family member) and we will insert it into one of the articles in the paper. YOU can decide which kind of article it goes in, from birth announcements or entertainment to crime scenes or obituaries! You’ll also be credited in-game as an Inspector of the Yard, making Lestrade proud!
A personalized 1889 Times Newspaper with callout!
This is the last tier offered to an unlimited number of people. You will be credited as a reporter for the London Times, the only paper Holmes truly trusts. Not only will you get a copy of the reproduced London Times paper but you will be able to write your OWN article for our editors!
A substantial article in the London Times – written by you!
The second reward for this pledge is from celebrated artist Arnaud Demaegd. He has created many illustrations for the new Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective board game and we will ship you a BEAUTIFUL poster from the cover – a stunning portrait featuring the master detective himself. See below!
Lastly, you’ll be credited in-game as a Reporter for the Times. All previous reward tiers are included as well.
A stunning Holmes poster!
Limited to 450 people, this tier allows YOU the opportunity to be on the game team and get your name immortalized in one of the mysteries! (Shout outs to those who figured out the significance of 221! :)
We will put your name in the London Directory – the main game tool that you will use to move about the city, gather clues and solve nefarious crimes.
Your name appears in the main London Directory!
Not only will your name be canonized in one of the mysteries (allowing you to lord your new found fame over friends and family), but you can help us write Holmes' description or observation about you for his files.
Your name and observation in Holmes’ personal files!
Also, since you can send one of the Baker Street Irregulars to your in-game residence, you can write their salty description about their visit as well! (Note that in all cases, the amount of text that can be written is limited to the game interface.)
Finally, you will be credited as a game character! All previous rewards are included EXCEPT the second $221 tier - Friend of the Good Doctor pledge rewards.
A description of you from one of the Baker Street Irregulars!
Limited to 140 people, this $221 tier is the second opportunity to be on the game team, securing your fame in a Sherlock mystery. This tier is suitable for those who love to write! Along with the previous Reporter for the Times pledge reward, in which you can write an article for the physical Times paper, you have the opportunity to write an article WITHIN the game. Put on your best Victorian hat and we will assign you at least one important article for the Times. Don’t worry, we’ll be around to help you make it sound like it’s from 1889! (Note that the amount of text that can be written is limited to the newspaper interface.)
You will be listed in the credits as a writer for the game. All previous rewards are included EXCEPT the first $221 tier - the Baker Street Irregular pledge rewards.
You’ll write at least one article for the in-game paper!
This is the last tier. Limited to 20 people, it includes EVERY reward from previous tiers plus BOTH the Baker Street Irregular and Friend of the Good Doctor tiers. That’s right. You will not only be an in-game character but ALSO an in-game writer for the Times and listed as such in the credits!
For true Sherlock fans, this also includes SEALED copies of the original Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective board game and the impossible-to-find West End Adventures expansion game -- signed by designer Suzanne Goldberg if you wish!
MINT versions of the original board games!
As an added bonus, you will also get the new Ystari board game. This completely updated version of the Consulting Detective game is absolutely gorgeous and recently won the Special Jury Award at Cannes. See this French link for a video that shows off the game.
The NEW Consulting Detective board game! Whoa!
Well, we hope these pledge descriptions were helpful. If we were to raise more, we would first work on subtitling the video into other languages and then localizing all the text within the game. If we were to raise significantly above and beyond that, we would develop and shoot an all-new mystery adventure at Paladin Media with you serving as casting director.
Thanks for your support on this project and we hope you will join us on this adventure!
The Zojoi Team
Each mystery will be available on the PC, Mac or any portable device running Apple's iOS or Google's Android OS. This includes phones and tablets.
FMV stands for Full Motion Video and, basically, means that these types of games revolve around viewing video as the main tool for gathering clues and solving each mystery. However, as mentioned, there are other game tools available to you to solve each case as well (The London Times, Holmes Directory, etc.)
Here is how we would use the $55k:
Recapturing the video/editing - $2000 each (x8 games) = $16,000
Programming/Art/Content - $2500 each (x8 games) = $20,000
Kickstarter/Amazon Fees - Approx 10% = $5500
Rewards - Approx 10% = $5500
Taxes- $8000 (Uncle Sam will surely want more than this :)
Total - $55,000
If we were to raise above and beyond that, the first thing we would do is translation into other languages. Because there is a lot of text, this would more than likely cost $2-3000 each language. After that, we would look at shooting a new adventure. To make it a solid game, it would cost a bit more than double what we are asking or around $120,000. This would include design and programming as well.
Yes! I have obtained the rights to all of my adventures including Shadowgate, Deja Vu, and Uninvited. The great part is that we still have the designs for sequels to Shadowgate (for instance) that were never published. We plan on rolling these out after the Sherlock Mysteries.
Good question. The biggest reason is that these games offered the greatest chance to get other people involved. I couldn't think of any better way to let more than 600 people have the opportunity to either be a character or writer. Plus, I just happen to love Sherlock Holmes!
Yes! I am consistently in touch with Suzanne Goldberg, one of the creators (her partner/husband Gary sadly passed a number of years back). I also keep in contact with Cyril Demaegd, the president at Ysari who is putting out the updated version of the original game - currently only in french. He and his team have done an amazing job!
No. Since each mystery uses the same game architecture, we plan on releasing them in groups of three (and possibly as each are finished.) We will keep you updated on this as we go!
