About this project
On May 21, 2012 I begin a 3-week "artist-in-residency" at the Grand Canyon National Park. My artwork invokes both visual and tactile senses to reflect upon the beauty of our natural environment. My medium is "digital silk painting", a combination of digital photography, quilting, and painting with dye onto silk. While on site, I will guide visitors in mixing colors they see throughout the day as the light changes. They will paint those colors onto silk panels that have been digitally printed with outlines they can easily follow. I will complete the work with quilted, thread-painting. I will enter the resulting collaborative work into ArtPrize, 2012. I am seeking funding support for supplies.

Connected as Nancy McKay (56 friends)
Nancy McKay earned a Masters degree from Eastern Michigan University in textile arts. However, self-guided study, experimentation, and visual immersion in nature have formed the basis of her artistic endeavors. She believes that both art and nature are uplifting, healing, and empowering. During 2011, Nancy served Michigan’s oldest land conservancy, Legacy Land Conservancy, as artist-in-residence. She is the art director at Camp Alabare, a Catholic Family Camp serving public housing residents from the New York Metropolitan Area. In Spring 2012 she will serve as artist-in-residence at the Grand Canyon National Park, helping visitors experience and express a deeper connection with nature’s wonders through art. Following her Grand Canyon residency, she will bring the canyon home to Michigan through talks, exhibitions and demonstrations in public venues.
