Photo-main

This short film voices the struggle experienced by many women in the 60's, questioning where their identity is held.

The 1960s are revered as a time of creative freedom, euphoria, and the birthing of a colorful culture but in reality the 60s were tumultuous waves of radical change, disagreement, and violence. It was a period torn between the new ideas that were being ushered in and the traditional values of the 50s that begged to be maintained. It wasn’t until 1968 that this culture shift settled in among Americans as a “way of life.” The year itself is considered the “Year that Rocked the World” because of the various major events that occurred in that single year: the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior, the rise of feminist movements, the pinnacle of the Vietnam War known as the Tet Offensive, the overtake of Columbia University, the violent Parisian student revolts, the shooting of the pop icon Andy Warhol, and the launch of Apollo 8.

It is this setting that lays the foundation for my short film: The Mother of Us All. The film's 37 year old protagonist Virginia finds herself lost in a battle between new world ideals and the traditional values of the 50s. Where she feels she doesn’t fit the stereotype of the “housewife” she also isn’t able to hold the position of a career woman because of her gender. In order to “find her place” she decides revert back to her inner youth and join a gang of teenaged feminist protestors.

The funds needed for this film would provide essential props, costumes, set pieces, and equipment rental so to ensure an historical authentic and professional set. They would also provide for the catering of food so to keep a well nourished cast and crew. And they would provide for the distribution materials such as DVDs, cases, printing, and mailing.

The pre-production process has already begun, therefore shooting will begin in late January. The final cut of the film is to be completed in early May of 2013. I am fortunate to have my good friend Peter Guth act as the role of my Director of Photography for this project who has worked with me on previous films over the years. Check out his work at his personal website: http://www.peterguth.com/

I urge you to keep the memories and mistakes of history alive through the power of film by supporting The Mother of Us All.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

The most significant challenge will be to create an authentic looking set with props and costume pieces that are historically accurate. My passion for history brought me to this specific time period and that same passion has forced me to dedicate mass amounts of time in the research stages. That research will inform the selection and purchase of those items along with consulting those who lived during that era. Other challenges include elements out of my control such as the unpredictable Minnesota winter to come. In order to do my best to avoid exterior shoots in the brutal snow, I will schedule interior scenes during those presumed winter months and the exterior scenes when spring nears.
