I am recording my debut jazz record with a world class band in Madison WI this November, and I need your participation!
What is this project?
I have long been dreaming of a body of music that sounds both old and new, integrating up the music of my youth with that of my adulthood, rooted in jazz but not bound by it, embracing pulse, harmony, and form, but not limited by them. This music would require special players to execute, and the right situation to bring them together...
My Opportunity
I have been selected by the Madison Music Collective (MMC) to appear on their Fall Jazz Series at the Brink Lounge in Madison, WI on Sunday November 4th. This entails a workshop on improvisation, and a public concert which will be broadcast live on the web and through Madison's WORT FM. The funding for this concert is enabling me to bring together what I have long considered a "dream band," and is a perfect opportunity to compose a set of entirely new music for them. Opportunities like this rarely present themselves to me, so I feel like I would be a FOOL to miss recording this special band in a professional studio.
Time in a pro recording studio is expensive!, and producing a finished product requires working in stages (recording, mixing, mastering). Your contribution will help me to record and mix this record, and you will be taking part in a major milestone in my life as a creative musician. This would be my debut jazz recording involving my compositions, and I am hoping it will raise my profile in the larger jazz and improvised music scene and lead to better opportunities for in the future.

Brandon studied music at Indiana University and then moved to New York to listen and practice for 6 years while trying to forget everything he learned at college. Brandon was once in a German rock band and lived in Berlin Germany for seven months trying to pay off his student loans playing rock shows. That didn't work but Brandon had a great time in Berlin. Brandon then moved to Shanghai China to play jazz in clubs and hotels where he got to sample many fine cigars through second hand smoke. Brandon has lived and worked in Minneapolis since 2006 and hopes to continue playing music forever.

He co-leads the internationally award-winning group Fat Kid Wednesdays with childhood friends Mike Lewis and JT Bates, touring extensively throughout Europe and North America. Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Obviously we only have a limited time frame to execute this (this will not be a "Chinese Democracy"-type sprawling process!), so we have to be very focused in the studio so we can get it tracked in two days. Once everyone goes home, that's it, and the mixing process begins. This limited time-frame does not worry me because the level of the talent I am working with is unparalleled; these three players are incredible readers, improvisors, and listeners. I am also taking our limited time frame into account with the writing - making sure I'm not composing anything that would require more than a few hours of group rehearsal, and getting charts and scratch demos to the players well ahead of time. We are also playing a performance at Elastic Arts in Chicago before we enter the studio, which will be an ideal "trial by fire" opportunity to test and temper the music. I am confident it will come together beautifully!
