Devil Music Ensemble live original soundtrack performance to the only remaining full length Kung Fu film in Shanghai and Beijing China
CHINA TOUR – MARCH/APRIL 2012
Devil Music Ensemble has been given the incredible opportunity to perform our live original soundtrack to the only! remaining full length silent Kung Fu film “Red Heroine” (from 1929) in China. This will be the first performance/screening of this film in China since before the Cultural Revolution. The Jue Festival of Music and Art has invited the DME to perform Red Heroine in both Beijing and Shanghai as a part of their 2012 festival. The festival, now in its 4th year, draws over 32,000 attendees and showcases 91 different events by 300 artists from China and all over the globe.
After finding out that this film existed, it took the DME 3 years of negotiation to get a licensed copy of the film, and another 4 years to get the opportunity to bring in back to China. This is a major opportunity for us to fulfill a very long awaited dream, make further connections and collaborations with music in China, while presenting our original music for the first time to this festival. Devil Music Ensemble has received a grant from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through USArtists International which only covers some of the cost, so we are now seeking donations to complete the budget and make this journey possible. We hope you can help, and please spread the word!
Devil Music Ensemble is a 3-piece performing arts group based in Boston that specializes in soundtrack composition and live accompaniment to classic silent film. The DME began scoring and touring original soundtracks to silent film in 2002, and since that time has had 8 national tours, and 3 European tours with originally composed scores to different silent films in the last 10 years. Recent performances by the DME have taken place at the: Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., Chicago Cultural Center, Dallas Museum of Art, British Film Institute in London, 2009 Europalia Festival of Chinese Art in Belgium, Amsterdam Film Museum in Netherlands, 2011 Rotterdam International Film Festival, and many more.
DME’s members are Tim Nylander (drums and Chinese percussion), Brendon Wood (electric guitar, synthesizer, lap steel guitar), and Jonah Rapino (electric violin, erhu – 2 string Chinese violin, synthesizer, lap steel guitar, vibraphone)
The primary expenses are airline flights: roughly $1,400 each for our 3 band members to fly to Beijing and then to Shanghai. Additional expenses we have to cover are air cargo, visas, ground transportation, film licensing fees, lodging, and food. In addition to covering some expenses on the ground in China, the festival pays us a total of only $500 for our performance - this we will be giving directly to the media company that we license the film from. The USArtists International grant ended up as only the equivalent of our airplane tickets to and in China. We're counting on your donations on this Kick Starter campaign to complete the budget and make this journey possible!

The DME is also actively booking other performances in and around China. As of now we might be doing rock shows in Kushan, Nanjing, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and other cities in Eastern China. This is going to be an amazing opportunity to experience cities outside of Shanghai and Beijing; and share the stage with Chinese rock/folk/punk/metal and who knows what other types of bands that are making the live music scene in China happen.
