Update #7: A great day for farming!

Posted on May 28, 2010

Hey folks,

Wow! We made it! After several long days, we got all 1.2 mill lbs of soil up on the roof. Meanwhile, your support has brought us all the way home on Kickstarter! We are over 100% funded, which is a good thing because now that we're done with construction, it's time to pay bills ;)

We can't wait to show each and every one of you the magic that is Brooklyn Grange farm. In the meantime, come meet us at the tiki bar in the backyard at Roberta's tonight to count down the last few minutes of our Kickstarter campaign! We'll be there from 9:30pm onward. And we'll be in touch very soon about rewards for your generous pledges.

Thank you so much for helping us make the world's first commercial rooftop farm a reality!

All the beets,

Brooklyn Grange

Update #6: Getting closer...

Posted on May 23, 2010

Hey all,

We're so excited with our progress both on Kickstarter and on the farm. We're about two-thirds of the way through our install and the roof is looking beautiful. And we are keeping our fingers crossed that we'll reach our Kickstarter goal this Friday, the 28th! We are so grateful to those of you who've sent their support via our pledge drive on Kickstarter, and to our friends and family who have come out and worked so hard to help us build the farm. We couldn't have done this without you guys.

Stay tuned for more farm news soon!

This looks fantastic. It's incredible that all that soil and farming is in the middle of a city. I'm pulling for you guys to reach your goal. You're finishing strong!

I'm behind this project 100% and pledged my money a while ago, sending out encouragement to my friends to do the same through my facebook page. Can you share your experiences with the stop work order placed on the installation a week ago? I think the whole green roof movement here in NYC would benefit from following your story. Maybe someone even has some legal help to offer?

Update #5: Farm progress!

We're excited to report that we made great progress last week and have begun installing soil on the roof! Check out our photos below and stay tuned for another update soon, as we begin phase two of the install on Thursday.
We also want to extend a big thank you to our kickstarter supporters, our volunteers, our landlord and the amazing folks of LIC, Queens!

Update #4: Our roof!

Posted on May 11, 2010

Hey folks, sorry we've been quiet the last couple days. In fact, we've been busy little bees installing the greenroof on our location in preparation for our soil, which we are laying down at the end of the week! Check her out - she's a real beaut, no?

We'll post more photos soon - in the meantime, happy farming!

Update #3: Party wrap up

Posted on May 3, 2010

Hey farm supporters, just a quick note to say thanks to those of you who came out to Roberta's on Saturday for our party. There was BBQ and bluegrass aplenty, as well as an announcement about our address - which is in QUEENS! We know, we know, ironic that Brooklyn Grange won't actually be in Brooklyn. But we'll be selling our produce in both boroughs and can't wait to meet our new neighbors in Long Island City and Astoria.

For those of you who couldn't make it out this weekend, here's a photo of the fun and festivities. Big thanks to HERITAGE FOODS, D'ARTAGNAN, ABITA BEER, TROEGS BEER, UNION BEER, SIX POINT BEER, BASTIANICH WINES and REGAL WINE for their amazing support. Big shout out to the BIRDHIVE BOYS and the DEAD RIVER COMPANY for some amazing tunes. And ongoing thanks to Kickstarter and our supporters for bringing us closer to our goal.

Brooklyn Grange

Connected as Ben Flanner (793 friends)

Brooklyn Grange is a rooftop farming business located in New York City. We raised over $20,000 in 2010 to help fund the installation of our first farm, which is a one-acre vegetable farm on the roof of a hundred year old factory building in Queens. We are opening our second farm this spring in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and will be expanding our total farm area by more than double. In two years we have grown over 25,000 lbs of fresh vegetables, hosted thousands of school children, and captured millions of gallons of rainwater at our farm.

Related to this project, we've enjoyed keeping bees on our farm not only for their honey production and pollination of our fruiting crops, but for the beekeeping community that they attract. We've had immense interest from the NYC community in purchasing our honey, learning more about bees, and getting more involved. This project will serve that interest, and the increase in honey production will be a valuable source of sales for the farm. The proceeds from the apiary will serve as a sustainable, long-term source of sales which will contribute to keeping our farms running and thriving for years to come.
