About this project
This September, I will be attending a delegation to Oaxaca, Mexico with Witness for Peace, the Washington Fair Trade Coalition and the Community Alliance for Global Justice entitled "Food, Farms and the Roots of Migration".
With a rich biological, cultural and geographic history and one of the largest indigenous populations in the country, Oaxaca is home to spirited farmers movements advocating for their right to preserve the cultural integrity of their food and the diversity of crops such as maize (corn)- historically the primary livelihood of many Mexican farmers. We will work with and learn from indigenous leaders, farmers, community organizers, and organizations working for food sovereignty, seed preservation, water access, women's rights, and both trade and immigration justice. We will be paying special attention to learning about the ways in which trade agreements like NAFTA affect local economies and communities, and how such policies influence the migration of Mexican farmers.
I am a writer, a community organizer and a novice photographer. I will be journaling throughout the delegation and later writing a descriptive and comprehensive essay about it which I will combine with selected photographs to form a creative, beautiful and hopefully eye-opening narrative of the experience. I will be reporting on the delegation to my local community, and intend to distribute the narrative to others interested in learning from it. I am also a cook, and since we will be learning about food and farming, will be paying special attention to learning about local cuisine and food culture. I will share my favorite recipes at the end of the narrative.
Money raised will help to assist me with the cost of the delegation and airfare (approximately $2,000). I hope to exceed my goal and raise most of the funds needed for this project. Money raised above $2,000 will help with printing costs that will enable me to distribute the narrative throughout the community.

I am a community organizer, writer and (aspiring) urban farmer and have been doing work for the Community Alliance for Global Justice's Food Justice Project for the past year and a half. I have a passion for raising awareness about the ways that the food movement connects movements for health, human rights and the environment and an interest in increasing a collective understanding about the ways that racism, classism and gender inequality affect the health of our global food system. In my free time I enjoy hiking, yoga, and cooking healthy whole foods from my beautiful garden.
