Boots Riley will write your name on a bathroom wall somewhere in the world, along with a phrase that makes you look good. i.e. "Jane Doe Rocks! signed, Boots Riley". In most cases this is an illegal thing that I'll be doing. But I'll do it for you for $5, just to get across the point that crime doesn't pay. I will not take pictures of it as proof, because that would be incriminating evidence. Just feel good knowing that it happened.

Boots Riley will write the name of someone- who is currently pissing you off- on a bathroom wall somewhere in the world, along with a phrase that makes them look bad. i.e. "Jane Doe Sucks! signed, Boots Riley." Just tell me the name. I got you. Just remember that at this point I'm something of a bathroom wall mercenary- so someone may end up paying me to trash YOUR name, too. I refuse to write people's phone numbers. This costs a little more, because it's not nice. Again, there will be no photo proof.

Boots Riley will rap a 16-bar verse on your song or mixtape. You send the music. Boots Riley will write the verse, record it, and send it back to you. Wow people at parties. I'll sign it on the inside, if you want. Size: 7 and 5/8. Puerto Fino. Made in Bogota, Columbia. Bought in 1998. Definitely a collector's item. Got my vinyl today - only a couple months late ;)

Just received my vinyl this morning. Cheers.
Creator x x on February 25
Damn. If I would have heard a portion of that, things would have been much quieter here, I bet. Everyone here actively WANTS to support you, but that 5 month silence took its toll.
In my case, this was my first Kickstarter. I wanted to do two different pledges -- voicemail message and CD. But, the way Kickstarter had it set up, I could only do one, which I found out after I pledged for the voicemail. I was going to set up another account for a CD, but ran out of time.
I filled out the survey on 9/26 and didn't hear anything for month or so. In November you posted an update here saying that voicemail messages were going out. I did not answer my home phone for any unrecognized number for a few days waiting... then no updates. I messaged you on Kickstarter in January, then the beginning of February then a week or so ago. I messaged you on Facebook at least once.
It's not a big issue, in anything other than the spirit of the deal.
Good luck on the bus sale, sounds like there were some rough situations throughout the tour.
Creator Boots Riley on February 24
I haven't responded on the comment board, but I have responded to many, many direct messages here, on facebook, and via email.
But, that being said, I didn't respond to everyone. But I responded to most. I was delegating that to someone, it didn't get done, but I didn't check back. Which is my fault.
I'm not trying to be defensive, it is on me. I'm just trying to address things you brought up.
You're totally right that I offered more than I could handle in a timely manner.
The reason for this was a miscalculation on my part. I had a certain price for the CDs, Vinyl, and shipping quoted to me. It turned out that the quote was very wrong, or at least communicated it incorrectly. I had planned to have the label's shipping company ship it for me and charge me for it, but the cost of CDs, Vinyl, and shipping was enough that I had to take it from them and get someone else to do it.
This miscalculation also meant that we didn't have nearly enough for the bus, as I set up the reward prices on the initial calculation. The initial goal we set was not all that we would need- we already knew we'd need more than $30k, it was just what I thought we could raise through kickstarter.
This part is to explain what's been going on, because- and I understand- it seems like I got the money for the bus and then was like "fuck it":
The bus ended up needing some crazy repairs at the last minute. Without going into detail on all the costs, with costs along the way on tour etc., we ended up spending an extra $27,000 on the bus.
Because of that craziness, I had to spend the little money I was going to use for rent- which I had from my publishing deal, and the deposits from the tour to make the tour happen. I couldn't just do a whole kickstarter campaign where people raised money for us to get a bus and then not get the bus. I also couldn't cancel the tour last minute because if that happened at this point, no booking agent would work with us again.
I came off tour- the thing I had been building up to for a year to be able to pay some bills- with $0 in my pocket, water cut off and 6 months behind on my rent. Our booking agent, who we just fired, was actually and documentedly lying about having a U.S. spring tour booked for us, so there goes that money. I have been spending my days since back off tour trying to stay above water or trying to come up with something so I can bring money as I am very close to an even worse situation happening.
The bus is now on sale on ebay and craigslist: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll… top of that, I didn't have a manager until 3 weeks ago.
So, I haven't been kicking back with the spoils. I've been extremely overwhelmed (again- nobody's fault but mine), scatterbrained, stressed and depressed because of it, and without help.
None of this is an excuse, but just an explanation of how it happened on my end. I still should have been way more on top of all this. I'm truly sorry for that.
Creator x x on February 24
Thanks for the reply, Boots, and I respect that. but there were several other points in my message that weren't addressed.
You push a hard line, and I applaud that. However, by being completely silent here for 5 months after the bus was funded, you have left some of us questioning, Hopefully you can appreciate that.
Creator Boots Riley on February 24
Todd- respectfully, I don't think that was the crux of my message at all. I am taking full responsibility here.
I was just pointing out that many people have had their problems fixed after they posted here. I, and they, just don;t always post back here afterward. I'm sorry you don't have your stuff yet, I've just gotten 3 messages today from folks in Europe that just got their stuff.
I
Creator x x on February 24
"When people have a problem they post it on here and then when it gets fixed, they usually don't come back and post that it was fixed, because they are happy."
This isn't a good position to fall back on. There are some, one I can say definitively, that have tried to contact you over kickstarter messaging a couple times since January. With the voicemail messages' estimated delivery as "September 2012," I think 4 months past that is a reasonable time to give for fulfillment.
Two months after that, well, it's a little disappointing, especially when there are voicemail messages that are unfulfilled, and that is not in anyone's hands but your own, Boots.
I'm glad you got your bus. I'm glad you raised more than you needed. I'm sad that you didn't limit the backers to what you could fulfill, instead you took all that you could and left people hanging... and then didn't post a reply until 5 months later -- when many have been calling for a simple "hang on, I'm on it" response.
That's gotta be on you, Boots.
Creator Boots Riley on February 23
I have had a couple different people doing fulfillment.
Both have had problems.
That being said, as far as I know, everyone in the U.S. and Canada that ordered CDs, Vinyl, and T-Shirts have got them.
Many of the European orders haven't been fulfilled.
However, I have recently got the European record label to do fulfillment for me to handle CDs and Vinyl for folks that haven't received their stuff.
European CDs went out this past Monday, and many folks have messaged me that they got them.
The last I heard the label was waiting for more vinyl to get to them from the U.S. (supposedly this past Friday), and they were sending them out the same day they got them.
When people have a problem they post it on here and then when it gets fixed, they usually don't come back and post that it was fixed, because they are happy.
The T-shirts for Europe are now in an office in Berlin, waiting to be shipped at the beginning of next week.
The book has not been printed by Haymarket Press yet. They had a personnel change and the project had to be layed out again. It will be printed in March with an intro by Adam Mansbach.
The posters are all going to be sent out after March 4th.
To Rok: I don't as much care about your reporting it (fulfilling the kickstarter stuff has been a huge job itself- even with 3rd parties handling stuff- that it has taken away from other stuff) but what I do care is that this has put me in a position of alienating you and some of our other biggest supporters. I am extremely sorry for all of this.
Seeing how disorganized everything was, at our European and U.S. shows, I announced from the stage at every show that if you ordered through kickstarter and haven't received a reward yet, you could show me your confirmation email on your phone or whatever and I'd fulfill the order right there after the show. But, I know that everyone wasn't able to come to the shows.
One other problem was that some people had clicked the packages for U.S., when they actually lived in Europe, and the names remained unfulfilled as they were on different lists.
At the end of the day, it is clear that this was/is an overwhelming process for me, resulting in the displeasure of some strong Coup supporters, and the neglect of many aspects of my business.
Creator Rok Kovač on February 23
I think that is heavily unlikely that we will receive our awards. Boots haven't been replying on my posts for 3 months now. I'm planing to report this project, because it will soon be half a year over the deadline. So much for taking care of your loyal fans and supporters. I hope I'm proven otherwise soon enough.
Creator donal scannell on February 15
Guys I haven't rec'd my stuff either but lets cut boots some slack. Do you want boots to be who is or some super organised rewards shipper? Shit happens, sure they could have been more together but does it make you like the music any less? It'll all happen in its own good time.
Creator Emlyn Thomson on February 13
Still not recieved my vinyl either, posted a message on the facebook page and got no response there. Will not be taking part in another kickstarter project.
Creator OllieHikaru on February 3
I understand the difficulty of shipping and post, as well as a tour. But my stuff hasn't arrived yet either
Creator Cameron Kirkwood on February 2
I'm still waiting for my $50 pledge several months after the project completed. Very disappointed, just wanted the Album, a tee and to support the band touring but the delay and absence of contact/respect here is shameful. Music can be free ripping it from the web and I honestly thought this would be a good way to support a band I liked rather than giving money to record companies...need to rethink supporting kick starters now.
Creator Chris Holmes on January 18
Still waiting too..... Come on guys, hard not to feel a little bit ripped off....which is not what I expected from The Coup.
I really just want to listen to the album!

Creator Michael Schwartz on December 24
No responses from the band on this page. I contacted their Facebook admin, and they said they would try to contact Boots about this, but I never heard back. Glad (or sorry) to see I'm not the only one who got none of their rewards. I contacted Kickstarter, and they tell me there is not a thing they can do, and also refused to contact Boots. This is, bar far, the worst communication I have ever experienced from a Kickstarter project. I have been listening to the Coop for almost 20 years. It pains me to have this side of them revealed.
Creator Phoebe Rasmussen Reader Zax on December 23
Hey- I am also still waiting on the book and the vinyl... Saw the show in Cambridge, you were amazing!

Glad I'm not the only one to have yet received there's, with the hurricane I suppose there might have been a delay, but with no tracking code, I have no idea where the copies to Europe are. As for the other prises, with the tour, they are probably really busy to sort out so many other gifts. I hope the vinyl turns up fairly soon.
