About this project
First Night in the Black Forest
In my minds eye I see a forest, filtered through a German lens, tinted with moonlight and shaped by a printmaker's tools. Come spend First Night in the Black Forest!
The organizers of St. Petersburg's First Night celebrations have asked me to participate in the "Peek in a POD" project, where artists are provided a portable storage container and then tasked to fill it with art. I want to bring my vision of The Black Forest to life for one night and share it with our town.
There is no funding provided from the First Night planning group, they arrange for the POD and access to electricity and the rest is up to me... and now with your help, its up to US!
First Night in the Black Forest will be a temporary, walk-in art installation in South Straub Park. Visitors will be invited to enter, enjoy, and become part of the work during St. Petersburg's First Night New Years Eve celebrations. You can imagine yourself to be Hansel and Gretel or Red Riding Hood or some other soul as you walk the path through my black forest.
This will be a family friendly, fun art installation that reflects my work as an artist and printmaker, my family genealogy, and German cultural influence. Visitors will be immersed in a 3-D representation of my 2-D creative process... They will walk through an original illustration that will temporarily suspend reality, take them to a wild imaginary place, and rekindle playfulness. What a great way to start a new year, right??
I have launched this kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed for art supplies and construction materials for this installation, including lighting, paint, wire, hardware, ink, paper, aluminum foil, foam core board, more paper, and probably a few things I haven't expected to need yet. This temporary exhibit will be free for everyone to enter. If I exceed my funding goal for the needed construction, art, and lighting materials I would like to be able to make a little something to give away to those who enter the forest as a souvenir of their trip. There are many levels of sponsorship and whether it is $5 or $500, I mean it when I say that you will receive my heartfelt gratitude for helping to bring this installation to life.
I am really excited to have this opportunity to challenge myself and create something for the entire community.
Thank you!

My name is Coralette Damme. I'm an artist in St. Petersburg, Florida known to most as The Crafty Hag. My influences range from Edward Gorey to German Expressionism... I think art should be fun and emotive and maybe a little distracting.
I've been a part of the local art scene for about 5 years now, working in media from stained glass to screen printing, painting, to block prints, collage and drawing... You name it I'll try it. This project is my first attempt at a public art installation but I know I can make a special environment that will bring a smile to the people who pass through it.
As a visual artist I find it hard to describe myself verbally so here is a quote from a local blogger, Luis, who has reviewed my work on his blog (http://art-taco.blogspot.com) I think he sums me up pretty well.
"Coralette Damme, aka The Crafty Hag, is a well-known artist in St. Petersburg circles who has worked in several media over time. She's no stranger to the dark side, and imbues it with whimsy, humor and good-natured self-mockery. Coralette works in a variety of media, from oil paints to linocuts. She is no stranger to exploring life's energies, everything from animal totemic forms full of power and mystery to her own artistic process.
