Help me attend an artist residency aboard a tall ship in the Arctic Circle and develop new, experimental artwork
As soon as I heard of The Arctic Circle artist residency I applied to their open call, excited at the opportunity to set sail with artists and scientists aboard ship in the remote arctic. I was accepted into their 2011 program. I am one of 16 international artists and 4 scientists selected to board a historic tall ship and sail along the Northwestern coast of the island of Spitzbergen. The program runs from September 29th to October 16th. During this time, participants will engage in personal research projects, and are encouraged to partner interests for collaborative work. I believe the program relates to my practice in multiple areas and will be instrumental in pairing my interests in sailing, sustainability and artistic cultural production.
Our sailing vessel will be equipped with wind and solar power to generate electricity during our voyage. I will be able to use to these systems to charge and run film equipment, and experiment with filming, projection and recording sound in the glacial atmosphere. I am interested in using solar power within site – specific sculptural installation, on land and in water, by using the stored energy from the sun to produce light projections at night. I am dually interested in the ground - breaking solar technology used in the Arctic which is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.
I also have a particular interest in the island of Spitzbergen as the host of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (also known as the “Doomsday Vault”). I will visit the vault and aim to photograph the vault’s interior. The Arctic Circle has also put me in contact with several professors at the University Center in Svalsbard in Longyearben. I will have five days to meet and interview scientists at the university. I hope to gain a visual and more detailed understanding of the processes being taken in the preparation for a global, tragic loss of genetic diversity.
Funding is limited and I must raise money to pay the fees associated with attending The Arctic Circle residency. The amount I am requesting will cover the initial down payments to attend the program but will not cover the entire cost of participating. Any donations above the funding goal will help pay for air travel to and from the residency, film equipment and a pair of very warm snow boots. Thank You!
