About this project
"Miranda" is a multi-media chamber opera that I'm developing at HERE Art Center in SoHo, New York. Basically, I started with the idea that I wanted to write a really modern opera. So I decided to base the opera on a reality TV show. Set in the not-so-distant future, "Miranda" is one episode of the hit CourtTV show "The Whole Truth." Vested with the power of Article 14 of the New Federation of Northern States penal code, the audience is granted the power to watch the proceedings, and ultimately convict and sentence a killer. The show is presided over by DAVE (Digital Artificial Verification Entity), the show's crime computer. With the help of the Ruffians (a troupe of prisoners/instrumentalists), DAVE recreates the events leading up to the murder. The audience watches the day's events from the perspective of the defense and then the prosecution. Finally, they must choose whodunnit: the father, the mother, or the fiancee...
I've been working on this show for the past three years. The music is complete and HERE is going to produce the show, but I have to supply half of the funding. This Kickstarter campaign is dedicated to the instrumentalists. They're really amazing. Not only can they play beautifully in a range of styles, but they're willing to sing, and they let me dress them in drag! With your help, I can pay these lovely individuals what they're worth.

Kamala Sankaram is a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. She's collaborated with the Wooster Group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Anthony Braxton, and many others. Her compositions have been featured as part of the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, the Santa Fe New Music Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Music with a View Festival at the Flea Theater, and in the article “More Song, Less Art(ifice): The New Breed of Art Song” in New Music Box magazine. She had the featured commission on the 21st Century Liederabend (produced by Beth Morrison Projects and Vision into Art), selected as one of Time Out’s 10 Best Classical Concerts of 2009. Her music for SOUNDING (directed by Kristin Marting and written by Jennifer Gibbs) was praised as “gorgeous pop-rock interludes” (Time Out NY).
