SatyrPhil Brucato, aka Phil Brucato or just plain Satyr, is the award-winning author/ designer of Deliria: Faerie Tales for a New Millennium, Mage: The Ascension and Mage: The Sorcerers Crusade, among many other works.
His short stories have appeared in Weird Tales, Steampunk Tales, the Sword & Sorceress series, the Bad-Ass Faeries series, and various other collections; his interviews, articles and essays pop up in Realms of Fantasy, Witches & Pagans, books by Disinformation Press, and a Live Journal blog. A former bass player for several local rock bands, he's still got plenty of friends living the dream on the road, including SJ Tucker, Nathaniel from Abney Park, all the boys in Emerald Rose, and Monica, Paul and William from Faith and the Muse.
In his copious spare time, Satyr also writes the urban fantasy webcomic Arpeggio, the tale of a clueless teenage bard. Away from the computer, he dances, spins fire, and pontificates at great length. You can find more information at the links below.
Hey Neal,
Having known Phil for years...I've been really patient. He loves to dig deeply into whatever he does...and often writes WAY more than he's asked to do. Nothing new. But what comes out (with the help of a good editor) is great work. PHIL!!! Get busy! I've backed another person for Rogue Mage (Faith Hunter's amazing world) and she got 2 books finished and is now on getting the art together...5 months later. Do remember this is supposed to be a game book...not a "Complete History of Music Through the Ages"...Hugs. Still looking forward to seeing the finished product (s).
Thank you for your response. I do appreciate the position that you are in as a freelancer with other projects. Even so, with the evolution that is occurring with fundraising projects in gaming (and everything in general), the level of transparency and communication that people like Daniel Solis, Gareth M Skarka, and Fred Hick provide can be hard to match. But it may be needed since people who donate to these sorts of projects are a different type of stakeholder.
I have posted the first of my weekly updates on the Updates section. Enjoy!
This explains why I had not seen your messages earlier. I have two Kickstarter accounts - one I fund other projects through, and this one. Because the first one is linked to my Facebook account, that's the default page I get when I log in. I deeply apologize for missing your messages before now.
I apologize also for the delays with this project, and I understand your frustrations with those delays. Honestly, I'm finding them frustrating as well. POWERCHORDS, so far, has generated between 40,000-50,000 words of material, but it's far from finished. As soon as I began the research and writing for this book, I found my original projections to be far smaller than what the material deserved. Rather than simply knock out a fast 60,000-word book, I have wanted to make this a fun, useful, and detailed sourcebook. Although I've been doing this sort of thing for years (almost 20, to be exact), creating a quality book is not an exact science - and my standards have gotten higher every year. I've already decided to expand this book to a roughly 80,000-word size, plus a second book. But yes - I fully understand your frustrations with the delay, and I apologize for them.
Also, as you noted, I am a working freelance writer, and I rely upon a constant stream of paying projects to pay my rent. This past year has been very generous in that regard - unexpectedly so - but it's also been hectic. Thanks to that large project, the rest of my schedule is a shambles. I'm working to put it back in order but I'm not willing to turn out shoddy material in order to finish things quickly. During my White Wolf days, I often said "Deadlines are temporary - books are not." Still, I'm a professional, and you are right - this is a contract, too. I will provide more material and updates in the future than I have thus far.
(Regarding the four-month project: It has since become an almost year-long project. After I turned in the original manuscript this past fall, the client hired me to expand on the original book... which has been fantastic financially but has required months of additional research, writing and revision. This, too, has thrown my schedule even further out of whack.)
As I've mentioned, all contributors will also now receive a second PDF-only book, THE POWERCHORDS HISTORY OF MAGIC & MUSIC, as a "Thank you" for your patience. This book features the 20,000+ words of material that began as a section of Chapter 1 and then swelled beyond a size I could include in POWERCHORDS itself. That book is also still in progress (it's currently in the early 1980s...), and will probably run over 40,000 words in length when completed.
You are absolutely right about maintaining a greater presence here, and providing more frequent updates. I have put an entry on my weekly calender to post updates every Wednesday from now on.
Again, I apologize for the delay. THANK YOU. Thank you for backing this project, thanks for the patience you have displayed thus far, and thank you for kicking me in the ass. Sometimes that's exactly what I need. :)
Cheers!
- Satyros
Hello,
I have posted in the comments and updates section several times as well as sending you a private message on the 18th of January and have not received any responses. It has been a while since there has been an update as well as being more than a year since this Kickstarter was successfully funded. The lack of communication and the more than a year wait is not increasing my trust in this project and is making it very unlikely that I will back another project of yours in the future. Considering how late this project is I would think that there would be more of a presence on your part.
When one of your comments back in September included: "I had a four-month freelance project - big paycheck, but I had to clear the boards entirely in order to work on it." it makes me wonder how many other projects this has been bumped for. I understand the need for a freelancer to make a living but you also made a contract with all the people that pledged money to this project. My contribution is minor in comparison to others yet I did pledge and have an expectation of delivery. Your drive began before Kickstarter required creators to put estimated delivery dates but I don't think that allows this to drag on indefinitely.
I hope to read some sort of movement on this project in the near future.
Sincerely,
Neal Dalton
So several comments asking about what is going on with the project and a private message to Mr. Brucato has not produced any response. Very disappointing.
So nothing?
I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. Out of the projects that I have funded, this is the only one that has gone for over a year since the fund raising ended and still has not produced its product. This includes other rpg supplements and even complete rpgs.
Hi, Neal. Yep - I just posted an update. Sorry about the delay. I had a four-month freelance project - big paycheck, but I had to clear the boards entirely in order to work on it. Back now, though... with some new stuff to show y'all.
Thanks!
Any further updates since June 2nd?
Hi, guys!
Yes, we're still working on the book. Sorry about dropping contact - the email address that was linked to this kickstarter account had been hacked, and I was denied access to the page for months. It's all worked out now, though.
Things are running a bit behind where I wanted them to be, time-wise, and way over what I wanted, word-wise. I'll post an excerpt tomorrow, when I can move material from my other "writing" computer to this one.
Thanks!

I was just thinking the same thing. Any updates?
Hi
I haven't seen any updates or messages in a few months. Is this book still in production?

Hello:
I still can't access backer material; how do I get this fixed?
I, like someone else below, cannot access the backer bennies, although we apparently each gave a giant bag of gold pieces via paypal. Could you fix this please, or advise? Thanks!
Wow Phil, that story made me tear up. I certainly know people like that...have felt like that myself (some of it). Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Pope Alexander!
And yes - all sponsorships will be honored and appreciated. :)
Thank you VERY much, everyone.
*hugs to Gina* Long time, no see, hon. Thanks!
Hello:
I contributed via Paypal yesterday ( it was faster) & just registered here, so I was wondering: how do I access the Backer goodies here? I'm very happy to play Borgia to Mr Brucato's Leonardo
this looks like another great book, so glad i could help ^_^
Congratulations! I am now officially very excited!
Congratulations!!!! We did it! :D
Is there any chance of an overview of the mechanics of the game?
Hey Phil! Doubled my backing today...in celebration of my birthday and the beginning of Fall. I've got ideas for my band. Looking forward to play-testing. Getting closer! Wasn't the goal less $$ when this first started--or am I imagining that??? Hugs, C.
DOOD!!!!!!!
A friend turned me towards this project, so thank Jen Page for my contribution to this work. My girlfriend is also going to donate, so it'll be $100.00 from each of us.
I would love to see a heavy metal band named: Scythic
A group of aged metalheads, who have passed on, but refused to leave for the love of playing......but the price for staying has corrupted them, which makes them worse, but their music more...in touch with the Anarchistic and Sociopathic elements of society.......
Anyways, I just moved to Ukraine, so was wondering if I could send you a forwarding address for shipping thigs to? As sending to me here in Ukraine would cost more than we're donating. We'll just pick the stuff up from our friends when we come back on home leave.
Anyways, we're reachable at self67@hotmail.com
Lord Rave-n & Lady Owl (Me and Maria) put our mouth were our money is ;)
Both happy and proud for helping this wonderful work of True Magic(k) :)
P.S : I've thought of a band that's gonna be right up your alley :)
Stay tuned...
Ooh, hip hop. Sounds like a Breakin' themed campaign waitin' to happen XD Turbo will ride on brooms and dance on ceilings.
Oh, NICE! Thanks again... and yeah - RIZE is totally the rebellion of oppressed ecstasy vs the forces of commercialism, corruption and conformity. It's one of my all-time favorite movies, and I used to use it in my classes back when I caught acting, film history and avant-garde artwork back at the Art Institute of Seattle. Tommy the Clown is totally a street-mage, and I'm probably going to do something along those lines in POWERCHORDS.
Love the page. I'll have to point my girlfriend toward that site. She's in her late 20s, and so plays Awakening, not Ascension. :)
PS: "Horned Diddy" - Love it!
Cheers!
Horned Diddy -
Done and done. I am proud to be helping to back this project. Just made my payment, glad to be of service.
As for Rize -
My God. THAT is what how the Cult of X fights the Ascension War!
BTW, please take time to check out the project John Snead and I lead, Ascension Nova - http://www.ascensionnova.wikia.com. We're working to bring that Ascension Magick into the NWoD, and thus honor your work and that of all the talents of the OWoD Ascension dev team.
Be well!
CB
Now, to think of my band's name. Hip Hop Battalion? Crunk Bros? I might create a set that's straight from the represents the Northeast, yo!
Here's a bit of Rize, to show you what I mean. Enjoy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch…
Thank you, Kaiu, and I totally agree. Hip-hop is totally part of the plan.
My outline for Chapter 1 includes an overview of popular music styles and subcultures. Hip-hop is right up there with Rock.
BTW, have you seen the film Rize? It's a fantastic documentary about the LA Crunk scene in earlier this decade, and has provided some vital inspiration for this project. Talk about MAGIC! Dude... :)
Phil,
Sounds like an awesome project. I will toss $50 into the ring on one condition -
Hip hop culture and bands should play as much of a role as other musical genres do. I'm sure that your project is meant to be a celebration of all kinds of magical music.
