I want to go to the New Hope Centre Orphanage in Swaziland, Africa to take photos of some of the children there for a photobook.
Everyday you hear about the struggles of people in foreign lands. One we've heard so much about that we have become all but desensitized to is the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. Not out of a lack of caring or compassion, but probably more so out of not knowing exactly how we can help or where even to begin.
Well, I have an amazing opportunity to make a small difference in this area. For a while now I've had a huge desire to make a photo book of some of my images that can really help make a difference. It just so happens that my sister-in-law's aunt is an author and she is working on a book called '24 Extraordinary Children'. We started talking about the project and she told me that it was about some orphans at a place called the New Hope Centre in Swaziland, Africa. I had not even heard of Swaziland so I did some research of my own. To give you a little background on Swaziland, it is a small country that has been ravished by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It has both the highest percentage of people living with HIV/AIDS and the lowest life expectancy of anywhere in the world. Obviously this has left thousands of children orphaned or abandoned, and many of which the disease was transferred to through birth. Here is an incredibly sobering article on the crisis http://weeklyworldonline.com/....
The New Hope Centre (http://www.newhopeswaziland.com/) is an orphanage that takes in these children and gives them an education and, in essence, a real chance at life. This is the motto from their site, "The New Hope Centre Swaziland provides hope for the future in a nation that is suffering from HIV/AIDS. Our mission is to provide a permanent home for orphaned and abandoned children in Swaziland, and to raise these children with love, education and a Biblical foundation, so that they are ready to lead Swaziland out of these difficult times and into a bright future."
Alright, so how do I fit in to this deal. Well, getting back to my discussion with Gwen (the author), she told me that she has been over there twice and how this booked has been birthed through hearing the stories of these children. Some of them are so traumatized that they can't yet even discuss what has happened to them. She has all the material she needs on her end but no photographer has gone over yet to do professional images of any of the children there. This is going to be a nice, coffee-table type book so the imagery is incredibly important. Since this is a personal project there really isn't any funding. That is why I'm asking for your help. The money raised here will help me pay my way to get to Swaziland so that we can start production on the book. I hope the story of Swaziland and the New Hope Centre touches you the way it touched me and thank you for listening and for your support.
I'll leave you with a quote from an email that one of the founders of the NHC sent (from her words):
"Dear Brooks adn Gwen,
reading this is like reading a dream come true, I think of the scripture of how
the children of Israel sat beside the rier and laughed as they saw God fullfill
His will in His way to comeplete their joy.
To make this book will be a "complete my joy" kind fo experience adn to have a
proffessional editor adn professional photographer si just the cream on to of
