Update #6: A CASH ECONOMY.
SHAKEDOWN is about a cash economy, it is a group of women that are circulating money to keep a show going, no one really gets rich, but lots of people get what they need to be supported and survive and also there is a vibrant culture that's created.
This fundraising effort on kickstarter contains this same core values as the film. Through all of your donations, family, friends, supporters over $14,000 of the $25,000 goal has been met in the last three weeks! Its amazing. The majority of the donations are at the $10 and $25 level.
In order to receive any money from kickstarter we must hit the goal. Its all or nothing. This update today is time sensitive. We have 10 DAYS LEFT and the heat is on. Please share this with a friend and get them to match your donation.

I videotaped the shows at Shakedown every Thursday and Friday night for six years. Shooting at night evolved into shooting the performers during the day, meeting their families, going through the process of their labor with them and just being there to record what they did and how they felt about that they are doing.
In SHAKEDOWN each voice gives greater understanding to the previous and the preceding voice. The shape of the film is circular, with each scene pointing inward to all the other scenes.
SHAKEDOWN is a feature-length video documentary about women's work, and how work forms identity. Its also a history of Los Angeles, or a history of Los Angeles’ black lesbian nightclub scene, and its genesis. It’s a history told in opposition to other histories of black performance art. It is important to me to show that this world / structure was created, planned and built.
