I videotaped the shows at Shakedown every Thursday and Friday night for six years. Shooting at night evolved into shooting the performers during the day, meeting their families, going through the process of their labor with them and just being there to record what they did and how they felt about that they are doing.
In SHAKEDOWN each voice gives greater understanding to the previous and the preceding voice. The shape of the film is circular, with each scene pointing inward to all the other scenes.
SHAKEDOWN is a feature-length video documentary about women's work, and how work forms identity. Its also a history of Los Angeles, or a history of Los Angeles’ black lesbian nightclub scene, and its genesis. It’s a history told in opposition to other histories of black performance art. It is important to me to show that this world / structure was created, planned and built.

Folks, as great as KickStarter is for getting the word out, according to their FAQ, they charge a 5% overhead - on top of the 3-5% in transaction fees imposed by Amazon.
That means that, at $27,221 in current pledges, Shakedown is only just now reaching its net $25,000 goal!
Do all pledges of $25 or more receive a dvd of the film or does that option need to be selected in order to receive a dvd?
