About this project
Hello!
First of all I want to personally thank Mr. Tom Waits for adding our animated film trailer to his website and Facebook page, as well as the honor of having his music in our film.
You made our whole decade!
Check it out: www.tomwaits.com/news
We want everyone to be a part of the Chris Roberts-Antieau documentary experience and now we can with the magic of Kickstarter.
Our movie is shot and ready to go!
We just want to put your name in LIGHTS, complete the EDIT, and hire local self-taught ARTISTS to sew gorgeous eco-friendly packaging. The funds we are able to raise here will allow us to hire brilliant self-taught artists. It will also give us the ability to get the word out about Chris and the Outsider Art movement! So, the more we raise the the more we can do to support the arts!
Who is Chris Roberts-Antieau?
Her work has always spoken for her, you can see this by going to: www.chrisroberts-antieau.com.
With no formal art education Chris started with nothing more than a few scraps of fabric on her kitchen table. She created simply to express herself in the only way she knew how. Today she is known by everyone from Oprah to the White House. This shy artist with a big laugh has kept her life and process hidden (until now!) in the woods of rural Michigan.
We have traveled all over the country to ask her collectors, peers, and friends; what they thought of Ms. Antieau and what drew them to her work? With fantastic interviews from: Ben Folds, Kathy Kinney, Simpsons VP Julius Priete, Producer Joe Henry, Rebecca Hoffberger, and Billy Shire (to name a few) we got a lot closer to understanding the mysterious world of Chris Roberts-Antieau.
The film will be released concurrent with the "What Makes Us Smile" Show at the American Visionary Art Museum. This show will exhibit 12 of Chris's works and will be co-curated by: Rebecca Hoffberger, Matt Groening, and Gary Panter. For those of you who have not been to this amazing place, the museum and Side Show Gallery are 2 city blocks of pure joy. Located in downtown Baltimore the museum and gallery are frequented by every celebrity, artist, and genius you can imagine. The trailer for the film had its own exhibit in the museum last year! Thanks AVAM!
With your help we can make this best film release on the planet....Thank you for supporting the arts!
(A % of the proceeds of this film will got to Cancer research and the Humane Society.)

Project By
Connected as Angela Kline (850 friends)
Her career as a filmmaker grew out of a background in fine art painting and illustration. An award-winning painter, she was studying for her masters degree in art at Claremont Graduate University when she was given the opportunity to create published archeological illustrations for several digs in Ireland. On a whim, she packed a few Super 8 Sound cameras and started documenting local teenagers. During these many months working abroad she realized that the large scale installation work she had previously created all focused on the motion picture genre, and began another graduate degree, this time in film at Loyola-Marymount University.
LMU’s program focused on narrative storytelling, but Kline found ways to build her skills as a documentary filmmaker. She wrote, produced, and directed narrative films “Alma” and “California Christmas”. During both, she interviewed actors in various contexts, then built a narrative structure from the dialogue.
Her documentary about nationally-recognized folk artist Chris Roberts- Antieau will be released December 1, 2010, and will be featured at Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum (www.avam.org). Kline is also at work on a new project due out summer of 2012.
