Family portraits in some of the poorest, most remote areas of Cambodia. Photos will be printed on site to give out to families.
Hi!
My name is Breck. I have been studying Khmer (Cambodian) for about 8 years now. I grew up in a family of 7 kids. I am also a photographer. Throw that all in a blender and you get....drum roll.....this project.
A few years ago I had this idea to offer "family portraits" on site in remote villages of Cambodia.
I will pick 3-4 areas in Cambodia with some of the poorest communities, and setup a space where anyone can have a photo taken of themselves or their family, with a high quality print made for them right on site. I plan on shooting for about 3 weeks, and covering at least 300 families.
I want to let them share their story with the world, and also give them a nice photo that they can hopefully cherish forever. I admit the "cherish forever" part may sound "cheesy" (puns!) but imagine if you lost all of your photos you've ever taken. Your baby photos you post on facebook, your silly school portraits, the photos of relatives that have passed. What a bummer that would be if those were gone. Many of these families have nothing but an oral history and a put together image in their mind of loved ones. So....let's take some awesome family photos for them and make a photo book out of it too!
After the project I will make two photo books. One special, limited run photo book that will be offered as an award to those who back this project, and another version that will be sold later on my website, with a percentage of each sale going back to the communities the photos were taken in.

What will the backers pledges go toward?
Pledges will go toward production costs and transportation. Costs I need to cover will include travel, food, hotel, a driver, and an assistant in Cambodia that can help me with the shoots and organization. We will be shooting in very remote areas that are "off the grid." No power, running water, AT&T, Comcast, Dancing With the Stars etc. so renting equipment such as a generator to power the printer and lighting may be necessary. Printing costs for 300+ 8x10 photos won't be cheap, so this will also be covered with the pledges. The remainder of the money will go to book production and gifts for my awesome backers!
Where will you be shooting?
As of now I plan on shooting in an aboriginal Phnong village tribe in the Mondulkiri Province, the "garbage city" in Stung Meanchey, and one other location that is to be determined. Depending on time, and with my backers input, we will select a fourth location to shoot at!
Of course, if you have any questions or suggestions please let me know!
Thank you for your time!
