About this project
My name is Charles Meacham, and last November I helped co-start the "Walk with Pride" project, to spend one year photographing and documenting gay pride marches around the globe.
My partner, blogger/coordinator Sarah Baxter, and I have documented Pride festivals in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. We are now trying to raise funds to photograph Johannesburg Pride in South Africa, one of only two pride marches on the African continent.
The Johannesburg Pride's motto is "We're ALL African," and we'd like to explore through photographs this theme, and how it relates to unity within South Africa, and the whole of Africa. Part of this project is also to tell the human stories behind each march, and share the faces that make up the local Johannesburg LGBT community. We are currently working to raise money for two round trip tickets from Europe to South Africa, so that we can include images of African gay pride within the "Walk with Pride" photo collection. After we finish this year long photo-documentary project, the WWP's photo collection will be used in exhibitions that bring awareness to issues concerning LGBT global rights.
Our website, displays images and stories from the past marches we’ve already documented, including the Prides in Taipei (Taiwan), Manila (Philippines), Sydney (Australia), Vilnius (Lithuania - the country's first), Minsk (Belarus- the country's first), Bucharest (Romania), the annually banned march in Moscow (Russia), Athens (Greece), Turkey's first Trans Pride in Istanbul, Zagreb (Croatia), Sofia (Bulgaria), London (England), and Europride held this year in Warsaw (Poland).

We truly believe this is a pivotal time for gay rights all over the world, as many nations are reconsidering their stances on important issues affecting the LGBT community, so by visualizing global gay pride we hope to positively contribute to these discussions on gay rights!
