Asbury Park Musical Memories documents those who have made, witnessed and participated in the musical history of Asbury Park.
Dear Friends:
It is a very exciting time in Asbury Park as we embrace all the city’s music -past, present and future. Our documentary is preserving musical memories from the 1930’s through the early 70’s. These stories would never have been known, other than to a small group of family members. The stories are incredible! The experience of life on the west side of Asbury Park during the 30’s through the 60’s comes to life in the recounting of histories by many of those who were part of the scene. The early days of rock as it evolved at The Student Prince, Mrs. J’s and of course, The Stone Pony is chronicled by those who lived it. Ever wonder how the Stone Pony got its’ name? Butch Pielka, the first owner of the legendary venue, reveals the story in the film.
What has made this project even more special is that Synergy Productions collaborated with students from Asbury Park High School and Monmouth University. The high school students were empowered to be on the production crew and were also interviewers. This was an incredible opportunity for the students who reveled in the experience. They enthusiastically embraced the process of video production, as they learned how to use cameras, lighting techniques and how to shoot an interview. The students rose to the occasion as they overcame their fears and became competent interviewers.
One of the students was mildly autistic and when he began the project, he did not connect with anyone, remaining on the sidelines alone. As we progressed, he was warmly encouraged by all and eventually, on the last day, he actually interviewed one of the musicians. Everyone on the set was so excited and he was incredibly proud. Another student, Chris Shields, a shining star at the high school and a recipient of the Mayor’s Ball Foundation scholarship, named this project as one the three top experiences of his high school career.
The Communications majors from Monmouth, worked on the crew, interviewed and mentored the high school students. They developed their skills as they shared their knowledge with the high school students. This real world experience was a taste of their future and they all were grateful for the opportunity.
All of us who were involved in the process were moved and inspired by results. No one could have known how valuable the project would be to all of us at the beginning, but by the end we were all enhanced by our participation.
