Elliot (11) and Nico (8) are kids in Albuquerque, New Mexico, who love to draw monsters.  Their mom, Christina, noticed that many of their monster drawings contained strong environmental themes, fears, and hopes. This got her thinking about her own fascination with monsters as a child growing up in Japan, and inspired her to revisit Japanese monsters such as Godzilla and Hedorah (The Smog Monster).  She began to wonder if there were other eco monsters lurking in our collective imaginations... and the Eco Monsters art project idea was born.

What we plan to do: 

Drawing monsters is a fun way to explore our concerns about the future of the earth. As a means of symbolic communication, the process of making art can be therapeutic. So we invite people everywhere, of all ages, to send us their Eco Monster drawings (monsters which relate to environmental concerns). We are collecting art work from around the world in order to 1) have a traveling art exhibit, and 2) publish a book of Eco Monsters. Monster drawings can be in pencil, pen, or markers.  Any size, up to 11 x 14 inches. Monsters come in many moods - they can be ominous monsters, or happy, hopeful monsters, or ambivalent monsters.  Anything you imagine!  We will select our favorite monster drawings in August, and begin exhibiting the art work on a web site, galleries, and in a book. Please help us spread the word, and please...if you like to draw, send us your Eco Monster!  (You do not need to become a backer of this project to contribute art work).

Please note: Your art work will be kept in the Eco Monsters collection and will not be returned.  If you love your monster, make a copy of it (but send us the original!  We want originals -- signed by you!)

What the money is for:  

Most of the money will go towards production costs of a hard-cover Eco Monsters book. Also: printing of a cool Eco Monsters poster, rental fees of spaces for showing the drawings, + picture frames, promotional pieces, expenses of a traveling art exhibit, and CD's of the Eco Monsters collection which we will donate to schools, libraries, art teachers, etc. Eventually, we would like to find a creative way for this art project to benefit the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
