I make things, and I particularly like building stuff related to sustainability. My 2 most interesting projects thus far have been Garduino, an Arduino-powered garden, and my fleet of 25 pedicabs. I've also fixed up a house that by all logic should have been torn down and written a book about my global wanderings.
even though you didn't get funded, don't give up, re-package the project, re-plan it, make it better and outreach to gather more public interest
Even if you don't get funded, please still make this happen! If you need any electrical help, drop me a line.

This is a great project, kudos to you for taking it on.
I have made a small pledge and will try to contribute as the project develops.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, will see if we can help.

Hi Panikos, Kevin, and Matthew,
Thanks for your comments. I'll post a list of my subsystems and intended plans for them later this week. Matthew: if I don't reach my goal, you don't get charged.

I think this idea is great! You should definitely try to make it as self sustaining as possible. Maybe a water and or air filtration system. Also you should try to implement some sort of generator that could have some sort of hand crank or pedal crank for emergency, fuel-less power. One nice thing is that starting right off, the container is air tight correct? That is extremely helpful for keeping bugs/water out, but are you going to make any holes in it? Will there be a working toilet? Oh and how does the funding work? If the project doesn't happen do I get my money back? Not that its a big deal, I could only afford to donate a small amount. This idea has the awesomeness of the open hardware stuff and that 3d printer that is open source.
From the CAD drawing I figure that the patio on the roof would do with a sun tracking tilt on even one axis (especially if the large face is in an east->west or west-east direction). This way it will maximise the solar collection by maintaining the optimal angle for the panels and prob have maximum shade throughout the day as an added bonus (this may also mean the container stays cooler).
As far as insulation goes, How will you accommodate that? Having it on the inside will take away usable space. I think you should use aluminum bubble foil insulation for the inside along with a cover for that is (aesthetically pleasing and water proof). This will be a very minimal impact on wasted space. And for the outside I'm not sure of what you can do. But I at least know you'll want to dampen noise for storms, etc.
I'm intrigued by the sounds of this project. Could I ask how you intend to release the conversion process to kickstarters? Are you hoping to release it all as one ebook or as chapters? Is there any room for community input?
This ticked off my "Zombie Survival Plan" part of my brain.
Cool.
