Update #1: Directing Dissent update

Posted on June 3, 2011

June 3rd, 2011

To all of Directing Dissent’s supporters, friends and family of John Roemer, and Park School and Friends School Alumni,

We want to thank you all for enabling us to raise the seed money for our film Directing Dissent. We are thrilled by the response that we have gotten with the help of Kickstarter and touched by the fact that everyone wants this film to be made as much as we do. Thank you so much to the people who supported us financially and/or by spreading the word - you’ve made this project possible!

Although our Kickstarter goal was set to cover post-production costs it is just covering our bare expenses to capture John Roemer’s stories. The project has gotten much, much bigger. We have interviewed many interesting people including colleagues, current and former students, friends and family of John’s as well as reuniting him with people that he hadn’t seen in over 35 years. We are proud to say that the film is expanding to become a portrait, not only of John, but also of a particular generation of the American Left.

Since there are massive amounts of post-production expenses (color correction, sound mix, mastering DVDs, etc.), we now have fiscal sponsorship (a non-profit umbrella organization that will help with fundraising). Directing Dissent is seeking tax-deductible contributions for the post-production and distribution of this film.

The fundamental issues addressed in the film (civil rights, social justice, and equality) are of interest to a wide audience. At the same time, it is our hope that Directing Dissent will speak directly to and energize those who continue to advocate for social change – from teachers to activists, social workers to students. This film follows John’s example, and brings his message to an even wider audience.

We would very much appreciate your continued support.
