In New Orleans, parades are the lifeblood of our communities, and traditionally it is the benevolent associations, or Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs as they are known locally, that host them. After Katrina, we organized one such club: The 6t'9 Social Aid & Pleasure Club.
Historically neighborhoods were divided into Wards, the Lower 9th Ward has gained much attention after the flood. The 6th Ward, also known as Treme, has historically been the epicenter of New Orleans' musical community. The name of our club was drawn in part from a desire to reinforce the connections between these neighborhoods, so we host a parade that goes from the 6th ward t' the 9th Ward, from 6pm t' 9pm. This year on on October 23
Every year we host a Halloween Parade. Its overarching purpose, as you will learn from the video, is to bring Halloween to the children of the downtown neighborhoods. "Trick or Treating" has become difficult due to the population loss and crime. This parade gives an opportunity for families of diverse backgrounds to costume together, and we give out candy throws, handmade throws, beads and treats to all the families that come out to see us.
The big expenses for the parade are the Police Escort, Insurance and Music. It is these things that create an atmosphere of celebration, joy and safety that has always given our parade a great vibe, and made it such a tremendous success. We also spend a small fortune on float construction and decoration, handmade throws, beads, "wooden nickel" doubloons and a few handfulls of miscellaneous items.
Our aspiration is to be financially self sufficient through membership dues and fundraising efforts, and we want Kickstarter to become an important source of fundraising for our club's parade. One great thing is that if you pledge at the $69.00 level, you will become a member of our club, and even if you live on the other side of the planet, you can sponsor someone to be in the parade locally, and we will hold your spot in a future parade! If you've never been to New Orleans, this is a great way to get a feel for the real deal, and a great reason to come way down yonder!

This year we cannot afford our kids carriage, so children are marching or going in wagons or strollers. By pledging at this level, your children and their friends can have a three hour rolling kids carriage party for up to 10 children, or of course you can sponsor a party for 10 local kids! We will supply all the candy throws, and have their make up done by a renowned professional make up artist on the day of the parade! If you choose the sponsorship, you will get handwritten thank you notes from all the children, and if we can get them all to sit still long enough, a group photograph.
