New Year’s Update

Whew! Those stretch goals have kept me busy. So many 13s! The writing on the stretch goals is about 60-70% completed, and once those are done I’ll be stating up all the magic items. There are 32 backer submitted items in The Reliquary and 42 for Ars Factum, and 28 already done, so that is 102 items that backers at the Ars Factum levels will get!

Speaking of stretch goals how would people like The Book of Terrible Wonder arranged? The second part will be the adventures, but for the 13s do you want them…

Arranged in sets of 13 with chapter headings.

Arranged alphabetically like a fantasy encyclopedia.

A hybrid where the book is arranged as an encyclopedia, but with a section which lists each of the 13s so when you need a distinctive tavern or a curse you can flip to the reference and quickly find one that appeals to you.

Arranged alphabetically like a fantasy encyclopedia, but with icons next to each of the entries so at a glance you can find a tavern or curse or fantastic weapon.
Something else entirely.

I’m also thinking, time and space permitting, of attaching 2 or so NPCs to each article. So when your players visit a tavern you have a couple of quick NPCs with names, appearances, and some sort of reason to be there and interact with the PCs. The NPCs will be system neutral, and probably only a line or two…

Helfa Greenfield – Drunk Halfling, hair in disarray, merry in her cups.
Helfa is drunk in the main room of the Royal Oak Tavern. She has just concluded a trade deal in which she swapped a cartful of good halfling-made cloth for two cartfuls of spoiled elven wine that she intends to re-label and sell at a profit as ‘halfling vinegar’ to a bunch of gullible dwarves that she knows. Even better she has gained two carts with donkeys for the one she gave away as part of the deal … do the PCs want to wait a day for Helfa Greenfield to complete her trade and buy the spare cart and donkey cheaper than market price?

Davis Stonecrusher – Human City Guard, out of uniform but still has distinctive guard boots on.
Davis is off duty and just wants a quiet drink and some food before he heads home to his wife’s awful cooking! He has recently won big at cards and is looking to purchase a gift for his wife, do the PCs have anything interesting for sale that his wife might want? Are the PCs going to ruin his evening by doing something so obviously illegal that he’ll have to get involved?

Of course adding two NPCs to each of the 299-odd articles in TBoTW is 600 NPCs! So it really does depend on if I have time to do it and space in the finished book, but if I do end up doing it do you want:
The NPCs to immediately follow the place or item to which they are attached.
The NPCs in a separate section, but arranged by place or item.

Other.
Comment below for what you want (ie 3-2 or 1-1 or 4-2).
In other news I’m going to be arranging organized play for 13th Age in the new year! I’m very happy to be on board with the Fire Opal Media crew. If you want to be a part of the 13th Age organized play network then there will be an official call for GMs and players (and venues) coming soon. This is just a heads-up to let you know that awesomeness is on the way!

Have a great New Year

ASH!

Sets of 13, alphabetically list within the type.
NPCs at the end of each item, location, what have you.

My official vote is to have them grouped by type, with an alphabetical index. Having them, alphabetical, with a "by type" index would be fine too. In fact, having both indexes would be nice, either way.

      I agree with Creedmore.

    4. Squid%20logo.small

      Creator Marcus on January 2

Sets of 13 with characters for each location.
I see myself saying "Oh SHIZ I need a tavern tomorrow"
I think an alphabetic glossary at the end couldn't hurt.

Creator Ryan Blackstock on January 2

I would like to see the sets of 13s grouped together, in Alphabetical Order of the groups, and also within the groups.
      Agreeing with Creedmore and 9littlebees

I'd like to see the 13's grouped together. I liked William's idea of providing an alphabetical index. Thus it would be a little bit like the hybrid approach, only reversed.

Including NPCs would be a great addition! I think they make the most sense at the end of the entry they're attached to.

Creator Michel Cayer on January 2

I would prefer by alpha, followed by lists by categories would be best for me.

      3-1 --aka--
"A hybrid where the book is arranged as an encyclopedia, but with a section which lists each of the 13s so when you need a distinctive tavern or a curse you can flip to the reference and quickly find one that appeals to you." plus "The NPCs to immediately follow the place or item to which they are attached."

    9. Missing_small

      Creator Creedmore on January 2

Sets of 13 with chapter headings - (13 Dungeons of Doom, 13 Flying Castles, etc).
Alphabetical makes sense, but so would 'power level' / 'level of general threat' / 'level of general disruptive power'
Any NPCs should be attatched to the item, right at the end.
Pathfinder's NPC Codex does a great job of giving an 'example NPC' for each of their stat-templates. Take a look at that if you can, because that'd be ideal :)

    10. C.small

      Creator Ithaqua on January 2

Sets of 13 with chapter headings.
NPCs are great, don't need 2 per every instance if it will slow things down (though it would be cool)
NPC to immediately follow the place they are associated with, better than hunting around for them.

    11. Elfmattoriginal-280px.small

      Creator 9LittleBees on January 2

Agree with John, groups of 13, but arrange the 13 alphabetically so they can be found easily. Also think that the NPCs (a brilliant idea if you can add them!) should immediately follow their "attachments".

    12. Feyd.small

Creator John Casteele on January 2

I'd prefer the 13s grouped together, though perhaps for an encyclopedic feel the groups could be placed in alphabetical order? Then you'd be able to search a bit more easily for the type of "13" you're looking for and wouldn't have to worry about flipping to different parts of the book if you were looking for more than one curse, weapon, etc.

    13. Kickstarter_backer.small

Creator William "Wystan" Curtis on January 2

Groups of 13 with Index in Alpha. I love the NPC idea.

    14. Quern2-trans.small

Creator Keith Davies on January 2

Hmm. In terms of sheer utility grouping the 13s tightly (each 13 together) makes sense.. but I think putting them together and sorting by name makes for a more interesting read.

The hybrid is probably a good compromise, especially if the abbreviated lists include a brief description and (in the electronic form) a link to the actual entry. Or, at the risk of making more work, two PDFs, one each way. I do this sort of thing pretty frequently, ordering things differently depending on use -- each is defined once in a central data store, then presented as needed and in whatever order needed. It doesn't allow for a lot of detailed layout, but the tools I use are generally pretty capable of accommodating me.
