The Most Important Update Yet: Stuff you Might Have Missed and Why I'm Doing This Damn Thing Anyway
With the Kickstarter languishing in the single digits of percentage, I started to consider what else I had that I could offer as a reward. Going to my 4 boxes of “Do Not Sell” comics, I came across the rare Being an Account of the Life and Times of the Emperor Heliogabulous, a 24 hour comic that Neil Gaiman released as an limited, signed, and numbered ashcan over a decade ago. I found ten issues of First Publishings Lone Wolf and Cub comics- one of the first Manga to hit the US shores and also unique for it’s size. The book was produced in the size of a “standard” American comic, which was much larger than the original size the story was printed in in Japan, and FAR larger than the adorable little books Dark Horse released the series in (which I own all of, by the way- another “Do Not Sell”). Next I came across some signed books, the first volume of Colleen Doran’s A Distant Soil and Jason’s You Can’t Get There From Here but much like ALL my Cerebus memorabilia, these books are signed to me. I mean, c’mon! Are people going to want books with my name in them? I doubt it.
But that’s the real problem here. I don’t feel like I know what people want. I had imagined that the Evelyn Evelyn pages Cynthia von Buhler donated would be flying off the shelves, they just sit there. I thought that all the awesome Artwork I commissioned from my friends would garner attention, they just sit there. Meanwhile, the Comic Starter Kit that I threw in last minute on a friend’s hunch is the most popular reward. I’m really at a loss. So I do what I always do- I asked the Internet.
Luckily for me, Neil Gaiman was around and he amplified my signal, spreading my question of what people wanted as rewards out to his million followers. And boy, did the answers surprise me. One person wanted to be drawn in a comic, one wanted capes, one wanted their portfolio critiqued. (Well.... we’re looking into the cape option, at least.) Someone else said we should sell shelf space to creators and companies while others, more than one, actually, recommended things that we have. Things that I talk about in the video and in the text below it. Some of it MULTIPLE TIMES! Obviously, as Neil pointed out to me later in the evening, the fault was in the delivery. For some reason people are missing these things when they read what Kickstarter playfully calls “the story.” That they miss it in the video is no surprise, I already know that it’s way too long and there’s really nothing I can do about it. I made the decision to be up-front and detailed in the video and almost 8 minutes is how long it takes. So let’s clarify a few things:
- The store will offer discounts to members (membership comes with MOST rewards at $20 and above) on the books they pre-order, classes, workshops and lectures.
- Members will also get FREE access to many lectures and classes that will stream online
- Members will get “early bird” first shot at limited classes and such via email.
- The list of proposed classes and workshops is available here.
- There are some STUNNING pieces of exclusive, highly limited art prints that you will not be able to get anywhere else, available at the $100 level (which includes membership and a bunch of other real cool stuff beside for the print).
- I am NOT trying to fund my life, pay my rent or make a profit off of this Kickstarter. Every cent will go to the operation and equipping of the shop. Yes, I quit my job so that I could do this, but I will only be paying myself for the hours worked in the store as an employee- far less than I was making at my “locked-in” teaching job at a private school.
- This is not a hit-or-miss thing. I WILL create the comic shop of the future. If this Kickstarter fails (though it shouldn’t) whether I kickstart again or just turn all this awesome stuff into a web-store to get funds remains to be seen. But it’s going to happen.
- Lev Grossman will be giving a lecture. I mean, a lot of other people will be too, eventually. I’m actually in talks with some awesome people but Lev is the first confirmed speaker. If you don’t know who he is check out this update from when he agreed to speak.
All right, this part of the update is really separate from what came before. In this section (and at least two subsequent updates to follow) I will be showcasing how I came to have this burning passion to open a comic shop, what the medium means to me and, most importantly, review pretty much all the comic shops I have ever shopped at and show the impact they had on me. I call it:
Tales of my Melancholy Stores (Part 1)
This is the first comic book I ever bought:

I was 8 or 9 years old and it was sitting on the rack at a local bodega, in a middle-class neighborhood in the Bronx. I was just the age for obsessions and my current one was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I ingested at a massive rate. Well, the cartoon. And the toys. But a comic book? There was a comic book?! Well, I had seen my older brother (a soon to be comic fanatic) reading comics now and then and anyway, it was the TURTLES. I had to have it. It didn’t matter that the cover made no sense. Was that a half-human/half-mutant on the cover? And who was the girl supposed to be, none of the women in the Turtles cartoon had black hair? I remember begging my mother for money to buy it and her grudgingly giving in. I do not recall the walk home, but I envision my chubby little hands grasped around the brown paper bag, wanting to open it and peek inside. Trying to walk while scanning the small sliver of story I could see through a pushed open cover. I know my mother would never have let me do that. I do remember being disappointed it wasn’t in color. How was I supposed to know which turtle was which?
The story was perfect for a weak reader like me. The mer-people the boys (who by the way, were very easy to differentiate) meet never speak but communicate through hand gestures and incredibly rendered body language. I must have read that book over and over for weeks. The story... the way it was told, the way the reader was pulled in.. It was powerful. More than a TV show or a book, more so than even a Big Screen Movie!
I started frequenting the bodegas in the neighborhood, rifling through comics stacked face-front on magazine racks or hanging loosely in spinners. Spider-man became my hero. The art in The Amazing Spider-Man was transitioning from fluid, dynamic Todd McFarlane to paced, solid Erik Larsen. One of the indelible images in my brain is a sequence in which Larsen shows Peter Parker, all dressed up as Spider-Man, attempt to web-swing after having been “healed” of his powers by an evil (though Spidey didn’t know it at the time) scientist. The perfect panic, the slow climb up the perilously high web-line and the panting aftermath, shaking on the edge of the precipice. That was done in one page. HOT DAMN, ONE PAGE!
Also, Spider-Man was cool. He had a hot wife, a cool but challenging job and lots of friends. I also knew that he had once been a nerd, and then a selfish brat and that he had loved a girl who died because he was Spider-Man. He was my guy.
My brother, now a teenager living in the world of multi-colored Kryptonite and Gamma irradiated smart alecks, eventually led me to our local comic shop. Now, local is a relative term. We had to walk about a mile, into the slightly less respectable side of town, to a tiny shop that was longer than it was wide by far and shared a wall with a porno theater. There we were told we couldn’t pre-order, or “hold” comics, for whatever reason. So we trudged out every Friday after school, our allowance money hot in our hands to see if they still had copies of the books we read. If not, it was off to the bodegas to hunt the issues we had missed or the series the store had no more of.
But that wasn’t the worst part. The part that made it so infuriating was the lack of help or choice. No one there cared what a little kid with 5 bucks in his wallet wanted or might be interested in, I was left slowly passing my eyes over tier by tier of comics, having almost no clue what I was looking at. And touching the comics, unless you were a regular (ie, you paid a yearly fee for membership), was strictly forbidden. My brother got along OK over there, as the owner could see the zeal in his eyes that meant “comic fan for life” and was willing to impart suggestions. I was less fortunate. They rarely had Spider-Man books. I actually was better off at the bodegas, where I could usually score at least 2 of the 4 Spidey titles coming out at the time.
Over time we discovered other comic shops in the area, but always requiring a trek. There was one that was wood-paneled and only half a mile from home, but the owner tended his large stock of back issues and rare comics and only got in a select few titles his customers wanted or might be interested in.
Another stocked a wide range, actually a little too wide for a 13 year old boy from a religious family. At least two tiers, if not a whole stand, were often devoted to laser-printed, badly drawn pornographic comics. The man behind the counter was friendly, to a point. But you never saw him move from behind there. He would ask you to come to him or prefer to direct you to a asked-for comic by pointing and shouting. That store made me uncomfortable and, anyway, it didn’t last very long.
There was an amazing shop, friendly, kind, knowledgable, but it was over 2 miles from our house. After going there a handful of times, we drudged up to it, sweating, one day and it was shuttered. A month later there was nothing inside. It almost felt like one of those stories where a magic shop appears and disappears. Except in our story, we could peer into the windows through the gratings and see the display cases and empty shelves.
But in all this, there was one shop that stood out. A shop that also seemed to open mysteriously while my family was out of the country one summer. Upon picking up my pet fish from best friend’s house, he told me about the comic shop that had opened AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY HOUSE! Well, around a corner 3 blocks up, but very short blocks, and easily part of what I thought of as “my neighborhood.”
Silvio, the manager, was the son of the owners and the store had been his idea. He knew comics were real money-makers, and that’s how he convinced his parents, who knew nothing about them, to open the store. He was a fan, but one who loved only the stories and the characters. He didn’t care to delve deeply into the characters’ various pasts or the stories of their creators. But he was nice. Sure, he pushed chromium covers and “deluxe” extra-thick trading cards (Both of which I eagerly bought). Yeah, his parents eventually didn’t feel comics were bringing in the money and soon the store was supplying beepers and “hip-hop” fashions. Yet, that store was the first place I saw Concrete. And Cerebus. And The Flaming Carrot. It’s where my brother bought The Sandman, a series that would have a profound effect on me.
I didn’t buy these books, but Silvio would answer questions about them; not really trying to sell them to me, just showing he knew his stock. On days off (or when kicked out of school, something that happened a lot when I was in 7th and 8th grade) I would mooch around the shop. Silvio would “hire” me to make sure the back issue bins were in order: that customers hadn’t put things back in the wrong place or backwards. For this I got a free comic, as long as I purchased something else. I didn’t learn much comic history from these bins, as they were mostly stuffed full of “hot” comics Silvio had been assured he would sell like hotcakes and had overbought. Not much in the bins went back more than 3 or 4 years but I got to learn the basic system of cataloging comics and, subconsciously, pick up some of the more depressing aspects of the industry.
By the time I was ready for High School, the shop around the corner was gone, having slowly displaced comics with electronics and clothes until, giving up the ghost of commerce, it closed.
I was going to board at my aunt’s upstate, but I already knew where the local comic shop was and what buses would take me to it, for my brother had just left the same aunt’s house and the same school.
