About this project

The City Love Project

For the first time in history humans live predominantly in cities. How do we relate to the city in which we live? How does our city relate to us? If our city had feelings, how would it feel? What would it love? After all, it is the ability to love, regardless of right or wrong, which brings us together. What does your city love?

City Love is an art project of Trey Phillips & David Dorfman. CLP invites anyone and everyone to paint what you think your city loves. With no right or wrong answer, locals and visitors have a chance to EXPRESS their personal interpretations.

The City Love Project (CLP) is a free interactive public art show in highly trafficked public places within any given city.  CLP is a platform for direct and positive engagement with people.

It is composed of several mediums including a prepared 6 foot x12 foot canvas, photo backdrop, and musical accompaniment.  The canvas is prepared with a rearranged ‘I (heart) NY’, to read ‘NY (heart) __’, or any city’s abbreviation, to visually propose CLP’s question.

Using black and red paint, the canvas transforms into a living portrait of the city through the eyes of the people. After they paint, each participant is photographed.

CLP enables everyone and anyone to freely express themselves, as well as break down barriers between all classes and ethnicities of people through participatory art.

Participants are able to continue their participation with CLP virtually through video, social media and still photography, creating multi-channel connections.

Why We Are Asking for Your Support?

The City Love Project is working with Kickstarter to raise funds for a 10 city tour across the United States.  To date, we have self financed 13 CLP events in  New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley CA and Jersey City NJ.

We've begun working with cities to help sponsor and host CLP as part of their urban development plans, but we need more funding to help take this project to more cities and more people.  In addition, we are working to create a documentary of the CLP experience and are using our up-coming 10 city tour to get the documentary started.

The 10 City Tour Includes:

  • 3 6ft x 12ft canvases in 3 different locations in each city
  • 1 3-5 minute video of the CLP experience in each city
  • 600 photo portraits of participants in each city
  • Over 100 event photos in each city
  • A gallery exhibit and auction of final works in each city
  • Loads of attention for public art and urban development in each city
  • Footage for a documentary on public art in America from each city

What We Plan to Use the Funds For

Your funds will be used for a complete 10 city tour across the United States.

Each destination requires canvas, paint, film and video crew, backdrops, brushes, planning, building, coordinating, hotels, transport, meals, and tons of pre and post production for the events and the planned documentary.

CLP is all about good vibes and spreading the idea that we are all artists and can all express our innate creativity if given the opportunity.  Each event is much more than the sum of its parts and becomes an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Help us spread the love to cities across America and eventually the world!

We won't stop until we've asked everyone, "What does your City Love?

The Creators

FAQ

  • It is our view that all of the final works belong to the people who help create them.  With that in mind, we seek out organizations in each city that can help display and auction the final painted works to help support a local charity.  The photo portraits, video and other media are all made available within a day or two of each project on our website and facebook page, free to download and share.
