1,000 Children project
50 portraits of young children in 20 different regions in the world
Hi! I'm David Sampson, and I'm starting a big project in which I shoot portraits of 1,000 children from all over the world and many social and economic backgrounds. The goal of the project is to emphasize what people all over the world have in common rather than their differences.
I feel like in the United States, we let ourselves think of people in other parts of the world as 'other'. We don't feel compassion or love for them because of that, and we don't help them when they need it. I want this project to be shocking (to myself, and to others) in the similarity between all the children in the world.
In the first phase of this project, I'll be going to Senegal to work with World Vision. I'll be there for a month, shooting photos for them, and teaching 4 photography seminars for their staff in the Fatick, Kaffrine, Velingara, and Kedougou regions.
On my off days, I'll be meeting my 50 kids and photographing them. When I get back, I will self publish a magazine with full page prints of all of the Senegal portraits.

When I was 5, I shot my first roll of film on vacation, and my mom was surprised to find that I had shot all photos of people, rather than scenery. It's what I was interested in, and still am. I shoot photos every day now, and I write songs in my band, Cains & Abels.
