'수능', '재수'라는 말을 영어로 단순 번역할 수 있을까요?

한국에 사는 사람들, 즉 그것을 경험해 본 사람들은 그게 어렵다는 것을 잘 알고 있지요. 입시제도와 교육제도에 대한 이해, 근본적인 교육 문화와 사회 전반에 대한 이해가 없는 사람에게는 그 단어의 뉘앙스를 전하기가 쉽지 않아요.

저희는 단편 다큐멘터리를 통해 '수능'이 무엇인지, 그것이 한국사람들에게 어떤 경험인지를 외국인들ㅡ그러한 경험이 없는 사람들을 대상으로 표현함으로써, 한국 사회의 단면에 대한 이해이자 이 시대의 단면에 대한 이해를 가능하게 하고 싶습니다. 그래서 같은 시대의 다른 사회를 살아가는 사람들 사이의 소통이 될 수 있는 다큐멘터리를 만들고자 해요.

여기 서 외국인들을 대상으로 한다는 것은 기본적으로 '수능'에 대한 소개와 이해를 중심으로 다큐멘터리를 진행하겠다는 것이지, 한국인에게는 아무 의미 없는 다큐를 만들겠다는 것은 결코 아닙니다. 구경거리나 겉핥기처럼 다루겠다는 것도 아니구요. 저희는 저희가 만들 다큐멘터리가 외국의 잠재적 관객들에게는 '낯선 것을 익숙하게 바라보는' 기회가 되고, 한국의 잠재적 관객들에게는 '익숙한 것을 낯설게 바라보는' 기회가 되기를 바라고 있어요.

우리 팀은 다큐멘터리라고 해서, 또 '심각하고 진지한' 사회 이슈인 이 주제라고 해서 꼭 무겁고 지루한 분위기일 필요는 없다는 것에 모두 동의했어요. 저희는 젊고 에너지 넘치는 창작자들로써 그와 같은 힘을 보이는 영화를, 한국 사회를 잘 모르는 사람들에겐 일차적으로 접해보지 못한 문화에 대한 호기심을 자극할 수 있는 영화를, 수능을 잘 아는 사람들에겐 자기 자신의 경험을 떠올리며 공감할 수 있는 전반적으로 유쾌한 영화를 만들고자 합니다.

그렇기 때문에 저희는 일반적으로 한국에서 많이 보이는 수능 및 한국 교육 정책에 대한 부정적 메세지를 암시하는게 아닌, 교육에 대한 열정이 어떻게 드러나는지 그 것을 흥미로운 문화적 현상으로 보이려 합니다. 그게 연출자 자신의 관점이기도 때문이죠.

"ALL in on The Exam" is a short documentary film I am envisioning to create this year. The film is about the educational culture in South Korea, which is known to be very intense and grueling. Specifically, it will have a focus on the national college entrance exam, Sooneng. The education issue is no doubt well-covered in Korea, but not known enough outside the country, so my audience is the rest of the world. This is becoming a relevant issue here in the U.S. too, as President Obama has been referring to the Korean education in several of his speeches (included in the video above).

The film will present many people's view on Sooneung, but at the same time the main storyline will zoom in on a particular student, and how she lives her life of preparing for this exam. You will see her at an intimate level through a self-recorded video journal as well. The film will give you an overview of the exam as well as the personal perspective on it.

Despite being a potentially serious or heavy topic, I want to use my youth and energy as a fuel for this film, and make this documentary energetic, engaging, and exciting for the viewers.

Currently I have a small grant from the university, but need a lot more to make this happen. Every one of your help will really count for making this project successful.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THIS HAPPEN?
The actual filming will happen this summer in Seoul, Korea! Mostly during august.
All post-production will be done once I'm back to Illinois, and during the fall quarter at Northwestern University.

WHO ARE PART OF THIS?
My crew consists of students from Northwestern University, Yonsei University (in Seoul), and Ohio State University. We are potentially getting more members in the future.
