A film about an aerospace engineer that quits his job and builds a 55 foot Scorpion art car for Burning Man.
In 2010 Kirk Jellum, 37 year old aerospace engineer, built his first art project of his life: A 40 foot long, 55 feet high fire spitting, laser beams for eyes, made of steel, work-of-art Praying Mantis art car for Burning Man. It was a present for his new wife. He’d never made even a ceramic mug before.
Then an opportunity to build an even bigger art car: An emperor scorpion.
It was built on a 28 foot long International boom truck, and is 55 feet long, 24 feet wide and 38 feet tall. It has a 7 gun flame thrower off the tail, 20 hydraulic points which make the arms legs, tail, and claws all move. It was made to look like an exact replica of a female emperor Scorpion.
It was built by a team of "burners", crafted by hand against a strict deadline.
The creation of the scorpion was documented from start to finish. We are in the editing process now, and are looking for like-minded, creative, generous people to help with the process.
Where will this money go? Up until now, the film has been completely self-funded. We still need to do the sound design, music licensing, coloring, graphic design and final editing of the film. The soundtrack is critically important, and we want to make sure the musicians are paid for their art as well.
First and foremost, the film is an art project, and I want to get it in front of as many people as possible. I love movies, and more than that, I love the process of creation to inspire and entertain. The goal is marketing and promot to get it into as many festivals as possible, and wherever that may lead.
Thanks for reading and helping to bring this film to everyone.
