AMERICAN SPLENDOR autobio comics and film legend Harvey Pekar died July, 2010. His estate is managed by his wife and collaborator, Joyce Brabner. For those who wonder "What would Harvey think about all this?" we offer this picture.
I am happy to have contribute!
Horraaayyyyy. Send us some digital pictures wen it´s don. :-)
I lowballed the amount and so have a bunch of legal, tax, order fulfillment and other expenses to wade through but it IS going to happen, although I have a lot of work in front of me. I have to make all those damn dolls!
People are still donating, either by PayPal to HPekar@aol.com or with checks payable to Estate of Harvey L. Pekar, PO Box 18471 Cleveland Heights, OH, 44118. That will ensure that we give money to the library in the end.
I know there was some concern over whether or not you would be able to finance it despite making the mark. Did you still get enough?
Congratulations!
Proud to be a part of this and glad we are making it a reality.
All Right!! I see the goal is reached. Congratulations to Joyce, and all of us who cared for Harvey, his family and comics! It's a good day.
For me this statue is one of the most important things to happen to comics. It manifestly solidifies comics as 'art and literature' in a library. This statue draws a line in the sand and claims the word 'Comics' from the comedians, as our own. No joke. Just as 'gay' used to mean something else, Comics IS Art and Literature. Administratively and for market 'penetration', 'Graphic Novels' as a label has done a reasonable job in opening a category in book shops. But Comics have always been comics, however bound, words and pictures, art and literature. Its time we 'stand up' to Culture, put our money where our art is, back the Harvey Pekar statue and climb-atop his shoulders, out of the gutter, kick-down the bookshelves, build them back up, taller this time, more space for Comic Books. All hail Harvey Pekar. Long Live Comic Books.
I'll never forget how Harvey and Joyce sent along some kind words when I was running New Liberation News Service in the early 90s. So I was naturally saddened to hear of Harvey's passing. And I'm glad there's an effort to create a cool memorial to his life and works. I just put the word out about this Kickstarter project to the audience of my metro news weekly - which I figure will help raise the last couple of hundred bucks needed to reach $30,000 at speed. Belated condolences to Joyce et al.

Come on, not much more to go and Harvey will have his statue ....almost there
Kudos to you Joyce and most especially to Alan for embracing, however hesitantly the video chat promotional thingy. Looks like you are all but in the clear for making your minimum, and now it's all about overfunding to cover all the tax and residual costs! I've just been pushing this all out there and will continue to do so. (also great chatting on the phone the other day too). Harvey would be so proud and pleased by all of this.
Greg
Just found this project from general e-mail from Kickstarter. WONDERFUL! I actually knew Harvey in the old days when I lived in Clevo in the mid-70s. I was music director for WRUW-FM & took over from my predecessor Bill Anderson as the guy who sold Harvey the albums for a buck so he cold resell for 2. I used to go over to his place & listen to Coltrane bootlegs, some of which he let me borrow for airplay. I do remember shortly before I moved, seeing a stick figure comic story he as working on with 2 guys shooting hoops - he told me "Crumb's gonna do the artwork" & I said OK. Next thing I know I'm buying the 1st issue of American Splendor...
Come on, everyone. You can spare a buck to help memorialize Harvey Pekar. It's super easy, especially if you're already set up with an account on Amazon. You give a name and password to kickstarter, then it bumps you over to Amazon who already have your billing information. Simple.
Do it for Harvey, do it for comics or do it because Cleveland needs more cool stuff.
I sent the link for this project to The Onions AV Club, sounds like they'll post it later next week! Keep passing the word along, lets get this thing built!
I'll be submitting the project link to other sites that cover comics as well. Start passing the word along and we can get this funded early even!
I'm excited that this is happening, Joyce! You're making great progress so far!!
When this campaign is done, my next mission is a project with Jakprints.com (the best people online to print-- on demand-- color or b/w comics). They're supporting me in a 5 year scholarship for comic book WRITERS who have not yet published a book. They get Harvey and they are backing this campaign up with Kickstarter merch. Catch up with me at the start of next year and help me write the policy for this thing. If you are ready to self publish or otherwise promote yourself, take a look at what Jakprints donated at the $2500 level, It's a good deal for people already planning to spend their money thataways.
Harvey indirectly got me reading comics again and I am now trying to break into the industry as a writer because of it. Harvey is but one of many important comic creators from Cleveland and I think that the city needs to know about how important those people have been to comics as an art form.
