I create Gilded Age of Manhattan illustrations from 1880-1910. Meshing the historic with the modern.
During the period of 1880-1910 known as the Gilded Age, New York City had become the city of the future. Industry, commerce, architecture and entertainment were just a few of the strongholds that Manhattan could boast about. There had never been a city like New York. Dreams were born and created here and anything was possible.
My main focus is on a small stretch of streets between 34th and 23rd, South of Broadway. It's an epic location. Vaudeville, Edison, Tesla, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Houdini, Tin Pan Alley, the birth of film and Madison Square Garden is just a brief list of the significance of the area. I'm really drawn to the history of New York City, I find NYC such a unique location and the cross over city towards the modern world.
There's a big shift in the appreciation of old New York, sadly we've lost some major structures but many businesses today are renovating the glorious buildings that still stand tall. Folks are curious about the past more then ever and I have always found people so curious about the stories behind my art. I really enjoy telling my tales and hearing what others have to say. it's quite a joy to have an occupation that can engage fans and supporters so passionately.
My three-step plan in becoming a emerging New York Artist
First of all, I need to get my work noticed more and get it seen by the masses. I love feedback and finding out what works and what doesn't.
SecondIy, I plan on selling my works to more prominent venues and customers. There has never been so many opportunities as today to be seen by not only local or national but an international market of fans and buyers. It's truly unheard of.
And finally my dream is selling my works around the world and opening my own gallery in New York to showcase large pieces of my art. I love big and bold art works.
New York is a iconic city of power and might. I want to parade that sentiment with my illustrations that remind those of a past of towering structures. The dream is more possible today then ever before. With modern technological innovations I can independently sell my work around the world. It's such a thrilling prospect and too exciting not to try and see where the journey takes me. I have already had quite a bit of success. Although I have been illustrating for well over 20 years, I've only recently pursued it professionally. The response was so overwhelmingly great that I sometimes find it hard to believe. My art is very well received. I have sold my art pieces at CB2, BoConcept, FAB.com and in April 2013 I will be selling at the MoMA Store. I can't tell you the exuberant feeling I have when I ponder the possibility of doing what I love as a career.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Art has to be seen and seen by as many people as possible. Creating the work is a breeze when compared to the real challenge of marketing yourself as an Artist. Searching evolving ways to find new people and markets and perhaps the one person who can make the difference and help me take my art to the next level.
