Rio de Janeiro has become a canvas for some of South America’s most talented artists, and it’s time the world sees this.
AEROSOuL CARIOCA: A Journey Inside Rio's Graffiti Culture
"People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish... but that's only if it's done properly." - Banksy
More than just doodles on a wall, Graffiti Art (Street Art) captures an artist's, and a city's soul, energy and state of mind, and additionally it can be a peek into the politics, culture and feel of a city. But for those stuck in the mud of traditional forms of artistic expression Street Art is just the calling card of visual rebels who diss-regard what is "aesthetically pleasing."
AEROSOuL CARIOCA is an attempt to capture that soul and energy in one of the world's most vibrant, and colorful cities: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This project will catalogue the work of artists in one of Rio’s most well known bombing crews, with video and photo footage, documenting them as they pack up their aerosol cans and paint around the city’s largest community, Rocinha, and other parts of Rio.
Local "bombers" will be interviewed in order to gain a deeper perspective on the influence and place of Street Art within the scope of contemporary Brazilian art, as well as understanding the value of Street Art for those who paint.
As part of the project Brazilian artists MV Bill, Marcelo D2 and MC Raconais, among others, will be interviewed, in order to understand how Hip Hop Culture has provided Carioca youth with alternatives to the violence that surrounds them, by giving them a voice when they thought they didn't have one.
WHAT WILL BE THE RESULTING OUTPUTS OF THIS PROJECT?
There are three main outputs for this documentary project:
1) A full length documentary about street art in Rio de Janeiro, with interviews, music, photos from inside Rio de Janeiro's Street Art Culture.
2) Digital and Physical Catalogues of photos, with Graffiti pieces from around Rio de Janeiro, which will be made available for download online.
3) An accompanying website, updated daily with interviews, music, photos, videos, links, and more information about the project, Rio de Janeiro's Street Culture, and Street Culture from around the world.
WHAT'S ARE THE PROJECT'S GOALS?
More than just capturing art on film, this project aims to change the perspective on street culture, and graffiti art, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Carioca youth, hit hardest by economic disparities, have looked towards the key elements of Hip Hop culture to express themselves, and insert themselves within social discourse. They've used Graffiti Painting and Hip Hop music to send their messages to the masses. But there's a twist. "Bombers," and "Mcs" have taken the root of hip hop culture and added that Carioca Cool that's made the city famous. AEROSOuL CARIOCA will capture that Carioca flavor, and bring it into your living room.

WHO ELSE IS WORKING ON THIS?
We've been working with Carioca based organization Mundo Real, to get a better feel for the city, it's residents, and understand the inspiration for the art culture in their city. With the help of MR, we will connect with some of the leading artists in this community and around Rio de Janeiro.
Making up the rest of the crew is Joel Davis, a graphic design artist, and professional "bomber" from Los Angeles, California, and graphic artist Jelena Jovovic, from Montenegro. Hip Hop Artist Dion "Infinite" Baker, and creative consultant Adrian Ayala, round out the crew.
WHY KICKSTARTER? WHY NOW?
This project began as a simple idea back in 2010, during a first visit to Rio de Janeiro, but unforeseen changes stopped production mid-way through. Now, almost two years later, the passion to complete this project is more tangible than ever, and we need your help bringing this project to life. Kickstarter provides a unique opportunity for us to reach our goal, and ever bit helps! Thank you!
