In May 2012, New Haven Theater Company will mount its most ambitious and exciting project yet— URINETOWN: The Musical.  We are thrilled to be working on this show for the New Haven community, but we need your help in order to make it happen!

About the show: 

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage caused by a 20-year drought leads to a government-enforced ban on private toilets.  Citizens must use public amenities owned by Urine Good Company, a malevolent corporation that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Among the people, a young hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to fight for the right to pee wherever you like, whenever you like, for as long as you like, and with whomever you like. 

URINETOWN is a tongue-in-cheek, satirical comedy inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.  Praised for breaking the conventions of what a musical should be, the show parodies fight-for-injustice type musicals like Les Miserables and Cradle Will Rock, while raising very real questions about capitalism, corporate governance, and social responsibility.

Why do this show?

For the people of our very own city, where mere parking meter fees can become a nightmare and budget crises prompt increasingly burdensome taxes — to say nothing of a national economy in a serious state of peril because of big corporate entities taking advantage of ordinary people—Urinetown will be a hilarious and stirring look at all-too-familiar circumstances.
